          Trouble at mill….

Turned the CA upside down to shake out the shavings and wood dust. Heard the 'sea-shell 'noise of ballast moving below the cabin sole! I did glass over the ballast in three layers when filling the bilge but obviously, not well enough. Looks like the moles have moved in but all will be well once the I've dumped small amounts of resin in the 'wells' during the next 24hrs.

The mole-holes will be covered by the 'oak' planking later.

20210716_214736.jpgSaloon aft bulkhead and aft sea berth have been panelled. Tops of lockers and seat benches ++ are loose-fitted for better access to R/C gear.

The small-ish area aft af the bulkhead will enclose the heads, aft sea berth, engine, companionway steps, Steering compass, 'chart table' and a small workshop to starboard. Buisy place!

So far, all of the components are removeable to faciltate painting and laying of the 'oak' planking on the cabin sole.

Many thanks Bob, very kind of you to contribute to the build.

I like to 'zoom in' on this type of photo to see the detail solutions used by the various builders. Not yet seen one with the interior fitted out. There are probabbly dozens of non-R/C examples decorating sideboards around the globe which are fitted with interior detail.

I have however a few photos ( some posted here) of the full size interior from the photo gallery on the Colin Archer Museum website.

                Thanks again,

                George

                  Thank you, George

I have always had an interest in the Colin Archer kit model

It was my first RC model boat and seemed very complex at the time and sort of exciting

                  I added a few extra features…

A Bilge pump and an extra servo for the rear sail

I was using TWO Tx`s from my Model Cars days, having only four channels each

                  Creating a six channel model

And was great fun on the water, with two of us controlling the ship!

                  Keep up the good work

Aft bulkhead under constuction. This view looking aft for a change! A locker to port and stbd. The space in the middle is for the ship's steering compass which is viewed from the helm through a port let into the steering well/cockpit.

Had to make the bulkhead in 3 sections to make the P&S sections removeable for access to the rudder and mainsail servos. The screws will not be too visible when the deck is on and all is painted. Motor cover seen in the lower foreground and steering well/cockpit unit uppermost

Aft bulkhead is still a bit of a mess, but will probably look OK when I square everything up and devise some small hinges for the locker doors. They must be openable to allow inspection of the servos inside and of course, the respective bulkhead section has to be removed if a servo needs attention. It's all a bit fiddly, but I couldn't think of anything better at the time. This stage of the build reminds me of the Fisher interior -one step forward, and two back.

The plan is to be finished with the interior by the end of the month. Ha Ha!

                        Hi George,

Very atmospheric feel to the interior of your boats, It's a lesson for us how to make the build more interesting

                        Keep up the good

I agree with Ray, I don't think I've seen another Colin Archer with the interior added. It really takes the model to another level.

                          Lovely job.

For hinges have a look at Doll's House fittings.  I recently used some doll's house door hinges as locker hinges.

The hinges on the full size are rather like ordinary door hinges. Trying now to make brass hinges from picture frame hangers! Fingers not small enough!

Only one locker door actually needs to move, the others will get faux hinges or I'll spend weeks on the job. Can buy doll's houses here Richard, but I don't think the small parts are available. Very nice vintage hinges though.yes

Managed to produce two hinges. Will probably refine them a bit later. The hinge funtion is not really too important as the locker door will always be open to show the content of the locker. The port locker door will not be hinged, but will made removeable to access the mainsail winch servo. Will make some 'faux' hinges for this.

In the present full size Colin Archer, the aft stbd locker houses a radar screen and a GPS receiver screen. So these will have to be produced in some way. Could buy them from CBM as on the Fisher but I don't need the complete instrument housings, just the front panels. I'll try to make these with plasticard and paint or scan a photo and reduce the scale!

In the photo/s below, the port via which the helmsman can view the compass from the steering well, has been drilled out.

Been a lot of distractions today, but have at least rounded the last 'corner' of the interior, A workbench will appear in the port quarter and just fwd of that the infamous 'heads' department. The heads ventilation system has been a bit of a problem, but I think I have solved it now by way of artistic licence.

Not too pleased with my home made hinges, so taken up Richard's suggestion about doll's house acessories. Found som tiny 5mm x 7 mm hinges at Tumdee-dollshouse-miniatures in England. These are supplied with miniature brass screws too! Will have to enlarge/strengthen the locker and door frames a bit I suppose.

All the above is in keeping with the usual one step forward and two back routine!

                                  George.

Thanks Neil, I don't think it looks much good yet, but I expect it to look the part when the interior is finished. There's still much to be done, but I dont have to tell you about that, you are one of our masters of detailyes.

Glad you got some hinges sorted, I use doll's house bits and pieces frequently.

Hi Bob, there are no 'shows' as such that I know of in Norway. There used to be a scale models boat club a couple of hours drive north from me but Covid has closed that.

The interior can only be viewed by lifting off the standard, largish hatch. I think it will be sufficient.

The large winch/windlass aft of the main mast makes it impractical to enlarge the hatch…but I have been considering ways to do it.smiley

I did wedge a Contour Roam 3 'cap-camera' in the wheelhouse sliding door of the Fisher -to film the interior during sailing.

The videos are on Youtube under 'Model Fisher 34 Motorsailer 1/12th scale'.
