I think I’ve seen a thread about putting names & numbers etc onto models, can someone point me in the right direction on how it’s done?
      Thank you
      Mick

          Michael,

have a look at my report on BECC here: http://www.modelboats.co.uk/news/article.asp?a=5149 and check out their website – I believe a catalogue is also available.

Basically all you do is to lift the individual letters from the backing sheet with the point of a craft knife and press them down in position. The adhesive is waterproof after a day or so but you can varnish over them if you want.

As far as lining them up is concerned, I use a short length of masking tape applied to the hull as a baseline to butt the letters up against. Then I just lay them very gently into position so that the adhesive doesn’t “grab” and you can wiggle them around a bit by eye to get the right spacing. It’s quite easy really.

OOOOh…we have had the lining debate not so long ago if memory serves, and the consensus of opinion was….there is no consensus!

I agree the principle of lettering is easy, but the lettering on my Titanic was 3mm high……

I was referring to lining up the letters as in “aligning” Ashley, not applying lining.

Your Titanic was obviously too small then….

                I sit corrected.

You may have a point. re Titanic size. If only I had a bigger car….

I have occasionally made my own water slide decals on the computer, using paper from Crafty Computer Papers. The name is printed on to the decal paper, then sealed with several coats of clear acrylic from a spray can. It is then used as a normal water slide transfer. The photo of the stern of my Grand Banks Cruiser illustrates my point.

                  Peter.

A useful tip for applying self-adhesive vinyl lettering/markings is to wet the surface of the boat with slightly soapy water – this reduces the grab of the adhesive and allows one to move it about/align/etc….. and minimises any air bubbles – once happy with the position, simply press down onto the surface and ‘squeeze’ excess water out (together with the air bubbles). Give it a day or two to dry out before sealing the marking with varnish.
