Hello fellow modellers I am looking for ideas for my monitor build. I need a servo that will do 180 degrees movement. At the moment I have a test rig set up and can not get the required movement.i have a computer radio that is set to max ,then i added a p96 servo morph to the set up . I can get the required movement with this set up but the servos stutter/twitch ,any ideas .regards sammyk

Rather than stretching the ability of a servo, its probably better to get a single turn winch and gear it down from 360 degrees to the 180 degrees you want. Or a 2 turn winch, which is 4:1 gearing to come down fron 720.

Model aircraft undercarriage retract servos all rotate 180°, and they're quite slow. P96 is not compatible with "digital" servos BTW.

Hello fellow modellers, thank you very much for your answers to my problem, I will try one of your solutions .I do not use digital servos I like to keep things as simple as i can ,less chance of me letting out the burning smell. keep safe .regards sammyk

Funny enough I bought a book on m15 when in the IOW last year (which is where we SHOULD be now!!)

It really was just a bean tin with a couple of big guns on. That it has survived this long is quite miraculous.

Did you mean M33 in Portsmouth Dockyard Ashley? M15 was sunk in the Med..

M33 is certainly an interesting ship to visit and construction was quite crude really. The after 6 inch gun currently fitted was actually carried as secondary armament by HMS Canada at the Battle of Jutland..

Living conditions must have been hellish in the hot Mediterranean climate.

My suggestion would be to use a 2:1 step-up gear ratio , with the larger gear mounted on a standard or high torque , metal geared servo , and the smaller gear mounted beneath the monitor . SHG ( no connection) do an excellent range of gears for this purpose , using either direct or belt drive , depending on your preference , as well as a good range of servos and sail winches .

                      Oops…yes! Wrong one. Thanks Colin.

                      Still bean tins though!

My earlier suggestion of using a winch and gearing it down was partly to get the required travel with a smooth response, but to also give a more sensible traverse time. A bare servo will try to traverse the turret at the same speed the joystick moves, which just doesn't look right.

dscn0865.jpghi there, if you go on to EBAY they do 180 degrees servos which are round about the £5 mark – but make sure you get the analogue one and not the digital one. That is one method,.

Also, if you go onto YouTube – there is plenty of videos – which show you how to convert a standard servo to either continuous rotation or, 180 degree movement.

I used a similar servo from EBAY myself for a crane on one of my models. I used a continuous revolving servo, but, used a gear ratio of something like 5 to 1 to give a smooth rotation of the crane. Just food for thought.
