      Thanks both,

I have quite a large amount of 3mm marine ply given to me as 'left-overs' from my next door neighbour who is just completing a rowing scull.

I was just wondering if this would do for the frames (or, anything else) on Ardent ?

      Cheers,

      Dave

To be honest I have forgotten what the thickness of the frames are but as I have a 58” schooner hull on the bench (aka the dining room table) with 3.6mm thick frames and an IOM yacht with only two frames I am sure your ply will be fine.

        Eddie.

SLEC replied (eventually) but want to see the plans first, plus a list of required parts – I would have thought they could work that out from the plans !

The staff at SLEC are great people. I've worked with some of them for nearly 50 years. They are, however, not modellers – they run a manufacturing business which revolves around a wood-mill and an injection-moulding shop. I imagine they would prefer you to submit finished CAD drawings of any parts you require. Tracing plans into CAD software and working them up for use on a CNC router or laser takes time and expertise, and you'd be charged accordingly. Frankly you'd be better off making your own with a decent scroll-saw; it would be a lot cheaper!

Fair point Dave, and effectively concurs with what Eddie and Ray are saying.

I recently spent the best part of an afternoon doing a drawing in MS Paint for a local engineering firm to cut and drill a top for my welding bench. Quite honestly, I could have done it in half an hour on a drawing board !

For 'one-off' jobs, the wonders of CNC etc probably aren't worth it….as I'm saving up for a decent lathe at present, the specialist machining saws may have to wait for Father Christmas.

            Cheers for now,

            Dave C

              Hi Dave,

Have you bought the plan yet ?? You only need a tenon saw and a coping saw to cut out the parts.Regards

I would also recommend a Permagrit sanding block about 300mm long 😉⛵

But how anybody can live without a small bandsaw is beyond me 😄

              Regards Ray

I have managed with just the scroll saw until I discovered how much I was using Roger’s bandsaw over the past few months, hence the purchase of the Ryobi for £175.00 this week, that completes my workshop equipment for model boat building, although a dividing head for my mini mill would be useful.

                Regards.

                Eddie.

                  Hi Eddie,

You can never have enough tools 😄 and you have some new boats to take home, have a good trip tomorrow ✔🏡

                  Regards Ray

Yes Ray – quite a lot of Permagrit tools of various sizes in almost constant use, but, I am a bit space limited at present.

I think though, moving things around a bit I could make space for a scroll or band saw if it had a small 'foot-print' on the bench ?

My trusty hand fret saw at the ready though with a selection of blades ! Plans to be ordered soon once one or two other projects further advanced…
