Has anyone used RC Worlds Poly C and a light glass cloth for a hull? It appears to be the same as Eze Kote for about 2/3rd the cost. Or are they both just a water based polyurethane varnish which I could buy at the local DIY outlet?

If I were you I'd hesitate before I used ordinary polyurethane varnish – this from the RC World website –

Please don't be fooled with other water based Polyurethane varnishes our Poly-Câ„¢ is the original and contains an adhesive agent to allow the nylon or cloth to adhere to the wood at a molecular level.

So now you know. Also note that neither Poly C nor Eze-Kote are as tough as epoxy resin but they are a little cheaper and easier to clean up afterwards. I've settled on Z-Poxy for wooden hulls, having used both types.

            Hello Tim,

I have used Poly-C on a balsa hull with nylon tights for strengthening. It goes on well and dries quickly, so can be overcoated rapidly. It cleans up with water and is relatively odourless. It isn't as strong as epoxy and the hull has suffered some dents with use.

I tried it because I thought it would be cheaper and easier- which it is- but I wouldn't use it again. I think it is designed for skinning aircraft wings.

I agree with Dave that Z-Poxy is probably the best option for coating hulls. It is what I had used before the Poly-C and it is what I'd always use in future. Unlike other full size boat building epoxies, Z-Poxy sands very easily too.

Is z-poxy finishing resin strong enough to be used on its own, for an external hull, or better to use in conjunction with nylon/glass cloth?

I've used it on smaller wood parts without glass cloth. If you thin it down 10-15% with ethanol then it will help the resin soak into the wood and set up hard. You may well need two or three coats.
