        Dear Kevin

Whilst eating my full English I heard a mighty clatter at the front door followed by a heavy thud I hurried to the door to find that these noises announced the arrival of The Winter Special.

What a mighty tome it is and I have spent a happy morning reading through its interesting articles, even DMs detailed cure to insomnia had some very revealing parts.

But by far my favourite piece is Glynns excellent foray into model mathematics which contains an easy to understand insight into the basic calculations that are involved in designing a model.

        A very good read

        Paul

Ah, but did you spot the deliberate mistake? I saw it far too late for changing it, and the Editor (bless him) blissfully sailed over it. Here's a clue – it appears more than once. (No prizes, as usual.)

Yes I spotted all three of them including the obvious one.

I'd rather have a lot of excellent information with (if you say so) three mistakes, than not much information that's perfect! The article was a brilliant read, will be read many times to absorb everything and is a 'Keeper'! I particularly enjoyed the fact that it pragmatically focused on model boats. Well done DM.

As usual Dr Thomason is having his little joke – there was only one mistake (as far as I know), and it wasn't deliberate!

Was that the unitary one? That was all I noticed except for an inconsequential typo.

Excellent article, like the others in this issue – blows the opposition out of the water!

On the 3rd Nov on the BBC News Website was a piece entitled:

'Why typos and spelling mistakes don't really matter'

It wasn't a typo. I used the word "larger" when I should have used the word "smaller".
                            It was a dumbo.

                                  Lager?

I had to look it up on Wikipedia, apparently it is a type of beer usually drunk by spotty youths with fake IDs. Lager is a non addictive alternative to cream soda and other childhood drinks.

When taken in copious amounts it can lead to excessive trips to the toilet but its not considered to be a real beer.

Normally people grow out of drinking lager in their early to mid twenties when their tasebuds mature to a point where drinking 12 pints of coloured water no longer satisfies, at this point drinkers usually graduate to a light ale or bitter shandy but care must be taken not to over indulge in drinking proper beer as some serious side effects have been observed in certain sad cases. These side effects include wearing leather elbow patches and spending Friday afternoons talking knowledgably about bus spotting.

I drink Lager. (But only the better and stronger varieties)

In Belgium in September I had a very large, very tasty and very strong lager which hit all the right spots and was easily the match of the traditional UK ales. It doesn't pay to be parochial – you miss too much.

I also drink other beers, a honeyed variety in Vancouver in July was also something to die for.

I enjoy all of them. Don't knock it until you have tried it. British is not always best!

But I prefer a good whisky.

My mouth has well and truly been washed out with a nice couple of real Kentish ales from the well known brewery in Faversham.

A nice cup of Yorkshire tea would have done the same but the beer came to hand first.

I am with you Colin when it comes to trying other beers. I am lucky to have a son in law who is a bit of a beer buff and brings me samples when he visits. I had no objections to my daughter marrying him.

I've no objection to a decent Belgian or German brew; it's the stuff that Paul so eloquently describes that makes me shudder at the word "lager". When I worked in Bristol in 1970/71 (at BAC in Filton) as an undergrad apprentice our pay-day treat was three pints of Lowenbrau at the Mauritania beer keller on Park Street. At that time it was 7/6d a pint c/w about 1/10d for Courage bitter. The latter actually made you more sober the more of it you drank – this could certainly NOT be said for the Lowenbrau (the real stuff brewed in Germany). I think I finally sobered up about two years after I left!
These days pretty much anything made from malt and hops and cask-conditioned is fine by me. God bless CAMRA for saving us from Whitbread Tankard, Double Diamond and Watneys Red Barrel.
