To annoy all W10 fans, I've now happily converted my old file server from R2003 for use as a stand-alone PC, back to running XP Pro SP3. My hitherto jerky and often uncooperative copy of AutoCAD14 (which I'd somehow persuaded to run on VISTA) now runs like greased weasel pooh; Office 2003 is a joy after that hateful 2008 stuff, and it's nice to get back to Photoshop 7 and CorelDRAW 12. Yes – I know XP's not supported any longer, but I have a very good antivirus program that keeps an eye out for it (AVAST Business Edition) and I've turned off all the automatic updates and scheduled End of Life announcements. It's very quiet and peaceful.
Often I think that progress is imposed upon us not only for its own sake but to keep the coffers of the hardware and software companies full to the brim. Sorry, Microsoft, but you'll have to wait a bit longer for my next contribution. Whoever coined that saying about not fixing stuff that isn't broken was a wise man.
Just as an adjunct, I was in PC World the other day, looking for a 32Gb flash memory stick, when I was accosted by a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed young chap (age about 20, I'd guess) with a clipboard, lanyard and fancy ID badge. He bounced up to me and said "Excuse me, sir, but could I ask if you have a mobile phone?". When I told him that as far as I was concerned they are the Devil's creation, that they are rapidly destroying civilised society and that I'd rather have a terminal disease than a 4G phone he went quite ashen…………… "I was going to offer you a free App…." he spluttered, to which I told him that if he gave me anything to do with a mobile phone I'd just grind it under my heel. "But how do people get in touch with you?" he implored, to which I could only shrug my shoulders and turn away. Sometimes it's fun being a grumpy old git!
