I have one of these boats that was bought for me in about 1971. It has only been in the water twice, originally with a Taycol motor but performance was lethargic. It then had an Enya 45 engine fitted but I could never get it to start and lost interest in the boat.

Now I’d like to get the boat up and running and therefore wondered if anyone has any suggestions about electric motors and battery power since I think the engine is probably not the best option.

I still have the original Waltron radio gear too, this was purchased a couple of years after the boat and has never been used.

I’d be very grateful for any help sorting this old girl out…….

          Hi ian,
I’m glad you’re resurecting the Wave princess, it’s one of my favourite boats from the 70s. I think you’re right about going electric, there are few places to run an ic boat these days, a pity that.
There’s a topic on here titled ‘precedent huntsman’ with a good discusion about motors and batteries that I think applys very well to the Princess and should be a great help.
As for the old Waltron gear, if it works reliably I don’t see why you shouldn’t use it.
But the key word is reliablly, I was never a fan of the Waltron, and modern 2.4 gig gear is very cheap. You might put the Waltron on e bay, I should fetch a few quid from a collecter.
Keep us posted on how you get on, a few pictures are always appreciated too, And keep the questions coming, this is one of those things many of us enjoy reading about.

          Charlie.

Hi Ian, Have a look at my Wave Princess in my photo album. Enter Nor Star in the search panel and it will bring up my two Nor Star boats. The dark blue one is a WP running on a 700 size motor, Mtroniks RV11 esc. on 9.6 volts . X42 prop. The red boat is a Wave Rider with a brushless set-up. both have Planet T5 2.4ghz radio.

              Hello Chaps,

Thanks for your replies and interest.

I have some “restoration” to do since the upright parts of the flybridge or rear cabin (never sure of what terms are used to describe each aspect of the boat) have been broken off at some point. Fortunately I have the pieces so I should be able to repair the original parts.

The boat needs painting again and the varnish originally applied to the deck has yellowed somewhat over the 40 years or so it has been on there.

You can see from the photos I put on here that there is a little tlc required but the boat seems largely sound, although not having been used I guess that is to be expected.

Your boat is a lovely example John, if I can get mine looking half as good I will be most pleased. I am going to show my ignorance here and ask if 700 is a generic means of identifying a motor? Is the choice of battery critical and how long can the boat be run for before recharge is needed?

I’ll read the Huntsman article Charlie, I kind of like the look of that boat and if my interest is rekindWP up and running I suspect I might have a go at building a Fairey over the coming winter.

              Thanks chaps,
              Ian
