Hi GuysI’m doing a scratch build of Chimaera, turn of the century Customs Cutter which will be powered by a Hemmins steam engine.  Can anyone recommend a  good brand of easy to use waterproof filler I can use to tidy up any bits prior to the plank on frame hull being painted?Appreciate your expertise.Jeremy

        Hi Jeremy

Sorry for delay in answering but I wanted to give some of the other members the chance to answer this question.

As you are painting the hull rather than varnishing you could use a 2 pack car body filler such as isopon, which is available at places like Halfords, this filler has the merit of being very workable when set and produces a very smooth finish when rubbed down with wet & dry (1200 grit) it will accept most paint finishes and is waterproof.

Before applying the filler make sure that the timber is 100% dry and free from dust.

A word of warning would be to check the compatability of the paint finish with the filler by using a scrap piece of wood with some smoothed filler on it, apply the paint as you would on the model and check for problems such as blistering.

Hope this helps and good luck with the build.

        Paul

Thanks Paul, appreciate your help. I’ve not got around to deciding upon paint or best application method yet, I’m thinking it will be a cellulous based car paint applied with an air brush.  Any suggestions based upon past experience. CheersJeremy

            Hi again

There is nothing wrong with car paint it produces a very fine finish but as in all things the work is in the preparation, make sure you use a good primer/filler paint and be prepared to do some wet & dry work before you apply the final coat.

Good luck and I hope to see some pics on the gallery.

              Hi Paul

Having worked in an car body shop many moons ago I totally agree its all in the preperation.  I can already picture the hours ahead of me using wet & dry…  As soon as I have anything worth photographing I’ll get some shots in the gallery.

              Cheers

              Jeremy

                Nice one Jeremy

I have to admit to cheating when sanding down as I use power sanders for everything including very fine wet & dry.

I look forward to seeing some photos.

                All the best
