Wanted shrouds for rigging of a 1587 Ark Royal model

I have an antique, wooden, half finished model of the 1587 Ark Royal. It is about 1 foot 6 inches long.

 

It needs 10 shrouds (about 8 ropes originating from the hull to the mast held together with cross ropes and tapering). I know that these can be made from individual ropes – but I am not capable of that. I have seen other Antique models with shrouds that seem to be ‘Glued’ together – are these available?. Alternatively is there anyone who could make them for me, either glued or individually made?

Hi Rob,

 

this is a very difficult thing to ask, that’s why you have no replies since the 10/01. But saying that, I do specialise in static period ships so may, repeat may be able to assist.

 

You don’t mention which mast requires the repair, though you do say its the shrouds from deck to crosstrees so they are for the lower mast, but there were 4 masts on her then.

 

Firstly I would require some accurate photos of your model as is, incorporating at least one measuring stick (ruler), preferably two at right angles to each other, within the area the rigging is required. I would then require photos of the sound rigging that still exists, or of the broken shrouds again alongside so as to try and gauge size.

With these I could possibly judge what is needed for the restoration. Once I’ve made that estimation an attempt at a solution might be forthcoming.

 

Ideally having the model to hand is the best, and maybe the only solution. I live on the Isle of man so that is probably a non starter.

 

If you can send those pictures through, we’ll see. I’ll look through my books for the period and trace the vessel.

Thanks for replying to my request.

 

The ship was my dad’s, started in the 1940’s who died a couple of years ago, I would like it completed to remember him by.

 

Trouble is I have only one hand and ideally I would like to find someone who could do the sails/masks/rigging for me. Alternativly I will have a go, but would find the rigging difficult.

 

The ship is 20″ long and the largest mast it 23″ high. The rigging is between 6″ and 10″ and the ship has 10 of them.

 

I will get copies of the plans to you if we take it any further.

 

I have 6 of the original sails intact.

 

The Isle of Man is a wonderfull place as we visited it about two years ago. How often do you come to the mainland as I could meet you anyware (liverpool?) if you want, to give you the ship, or just post any rigging bits

Hi Rob and interested parties,

 

just to complete your posting and thread from earlier this year, Ark Royal is complete and as requested, now resides in a display case specially sized for her and your fittings.

 

It was a pleasure to take on the job for you, and as you know I will be delivering her to you in November while on route to the IMBS at Warwick where I’m attending with AMBO with my thames barges etc.

 

Thanks for the challenge, I hope you are satisfied with the end result.

PS the work was done on “out-of-pocket-expenses only,” and without the display case was just under £52 sterling.

Kimo. I would have thought anyone would be satisfied with that “repair”, or perhaps rebuild to be more accurate. Looks very nice, and a nice change to the endless Victories one sees ! A real thruppence ship.

 

Makes you realise just how small these ships were. Tiny. The replica “golden hind” in London is more like a day yacht than a galleon .

Good morning Rob, My inquiry comes from Christchurch NZ. It seems we have simular circumstances with an Ark Royal heritage. My Grandfather also built this model, we assume back during the 1940's war years. I inherited the model, which had been in the attic for as much as 50 years. Your model is a very close match. I wonder whether the concept came from a UK model magazine of the time, I seem to recall these around in earlier years. I'm presently conserving/refurbishing the model, trying to keep as much as the original as is. The process is very much a jigsaw of dislocated parts. Most of the main rigging is intact, but a birds nest yet to be untangled. Rodents have had a go as well. I'm conscious of being rude/pushy, but the plans you have would greatly help in coming to terms with the layout. Is there a chance of obtaining a copy?

Hi Tony,

I'm the chap that helped Rob out with his Ark Royal. I'll contact him and let him know you're on the forum asking questions.

I used another plan of rigging as well, as the "Modelcraft" plans are a bit skimpy on the actual rigging, and actually omit some, and have some, shall we say, incorrectly drawn on their plan.

There is a photograph of the two plans that Rob has in this thread (above) and they can be reasonably re-sized. I'll get the reference to the rigging plan I used and send to you in a later post.

I've now done three of these "Ark Royals" in the last three years, the latest being the Golden Hind. They seem to have been very popular in the early 1950's.

Can anybody suggest a source for this ships plans with which to create a plank on frame model. I appreciate little or no records survive for ships from this period and that all existing drawings may be an experts best impression.

I'm looking to recreate this in as true and original form as possible.

The NMM have been very helpful and I have some books which reference the vessel, but as yet I have no plans and want to avoid having to draw and guess the detail.
