      Many thanks Ray

With my short cut planking method, building is quite ok now………With the aggro of the black caulking, it would have been a different story!

I`m hoping there may be a kit for the Jolly Boat available, when the time comes?…….About 8" long or a child`s toy etc

      Thanks for looking in

Work in progress for the stalwarts, who like to see what`s been done today

It`s amazing how fast the planks are being used up

And then you end up with a bit of bare deck and no planks left….crying

            Thank you, Colin

Don't worry about a few planks short……..Got a bag full of 0.018" thick planks

I can always use a few stacked up………Necessity is the motherhood of invention, don't forget!

              O ye of little faith……..The job`s a good `un

Deck planking finished and looks ok to me…….IMO

Although it does have the look of a trawler?

              What`s next?

That is a very pretty-looking deck, Bob! Really nicely done, and brings the whole structure to life …

I've noticed, the gaps between the planks, are not as uniform as the infilled planking, but it's good enough for this build

How are you doing with your Plankathon?

Looking great Bob- and if you'd used black caulking and joggled the planks you wouldn't be a third of the way through! Are you going to plank the wheelhouse deck too? Look forward to seeing how she goes on- you always seem to make such fast progress!

I haven't been in the workshop for ages as other activities seem to take over in the summer- mainly outdoor music. I expect Mattias (Banjo) will understand this.

                    Happy planking,

I should plank the cabin deck, but need to be sure that is the best option

There's no access from the Captains cabin……..May look better……As painted paper?

Don't want the boat to look too busy

Will have a scout round first……..I'll have a peep at yours and Ray's roofs

I think the white roofs look less gloomy……..With the cabin walls in Mahogany veneer

The hull may be a creamy colour as Ian`s model, with Mahogany rubbing strips etc

                        Brass port holes and handrails

Now………Where have we seen that black and white oilcloth before?

Of course, the cabin floor will be a lot lower

I agree Bob, that's looking good. What about a nice painted canvas finish? I often use a sheet of polycotton, or maybe something a bit rougher in this scale, and glue it down with dilute PVA. Make sure there are no wrinkles by squeegeeing with an old credit card or similar and then paint when dry- perhaps a nice off white or buff. It adds a nice bit of texture and interest. I did it on the wheelhouse roof of my Silver Mist and on the decks of Mistral.

Here's me building your boat again but it's just a thought.

Here's a picture of Mistral- you can't really tell but you'll have to believe me!

                              Hello Ian

I like the cloth idea and the off white idea too

We don't want it looking too new

Don't worry about making too many suggestions………All very welcome

Just tried a few very fine brass nails and they look quite nice……….Picture shortly

I'm a big fan of small brass nails Bob and use them for attaching skins, rubbing strips, handrails etc. I like a mechanical fixing!

I think at your scale they would look great used to tack down the canvas in nice lines- and even if they were a bit out of scale they would look good – very boaty! Having seen your rivetting in the past I know you like a bit of textural interest.

Glad you liked the canvas idea and will be interested to see what you decide. I wish I'd thought of doing the top decks like that now! I also wish I had the courage to make my usual bronze portholes but steep them in a briny solution to allow them to go green- which is what you are more likely to see on old classic boats than shiny polished ones. And make the mahogany a bit mouldy and grubby. Could never quite bring myself to do it though. Sounds as if you might be happier to model a well worn and loved classic- I await with interest.

Your SM is really beginning to look the biz.

                                All the best,

Can`t cover the cabin roof yet until the Cockpit area is sorted out

Made a simple box shape to create the floor level

I`ve got two square yards of the finest Egyptian cotton stashed away somewhere, for the last ten years and I saw it about a month ago………Got a feeling I`ve thrown it out………..My usual trick!

So I`ll be using the wallpaper backing again, for the roof……..At least I can show a few joining seams etc

You've thrown away 2sq yards of egyptian cotton?!  Mind you we've all done it. I'm always amazed at how when you chuck something out you immediately find a use for it- I think it's because it's fresh in the mind. Can't you nick a bit of bedsheet?

I used egyptian cotton on Mistral- lovely stuff. I may have some left. I'll check, and if I have I'll send you a pm- I won't have thrown it away.wink

I also forgot to mention I liked the black and white tiling effect for the wheelhouse floor- all you need now is to get the wheel and engine controls chromed!

Tidied up the cockpit assembly prior to painting and glazing

Also looking at the main cabin windows now………..They look a bit shallow compared to the cockpit windows?

                                            Hi Bob,

You may have noticed I changed the saloon window shape on my Silver Mist. I found a photo of a very similar vessel on the internet and I liked the windows. It also saved having to make metal window frames!

If you have followed the dimensions on the plan all should be well. She's looking very imposing by the way- what a sight she'll be afloat.

For some years I have been thinking about a double sized Guardsman- the design that Tony built. Your Silver Mist is inpiring me to think about starting in the autumn. It'll weigh in the order of 36lb so I should do it while my back's still strong enough.

                                            All the best,

                                              Hello Ian

Vic`s windows look a very strange assortment, to me…………In fact, the entire boat is making me stop and think

The proportions seem wrong……Doesn`t worry me though…….It`s Vics design from photographs and that`s probably why it looks so pretty?……..Will come back to this, shortly

I would really enjoy watching you build the double sized Guardsman, indeed!

Why not start right away?……..It`s almost Autumn already

My model feels like 20 lb at the moment……..I`ll weigh it properly, when I can find the spring balance

Without being disrespectful to either Bob / Ian or Vic but from looking at this image showing the shape of the hull I have to say that the word Tub comes to mind.

                                                on bench 1.jpg

This is my own opinion and I have no wish to upset anyone, perhaps the camara angle makes the hull seem 'tub like' or maybe I have spent to long looking at highspeed hulls.

                                                  Hello Paul

The hull does seem a clumsy shape without the handrails etc and looks a bit short compared to the magazine cover picture for some reason

The figures on the model picture look out of scale, compared to the hull depth?

Doesn't bother me…….I'm simply making a model of yesteryear, as designed by Vic

With all it's quirkiness and charm

                                                    Hi Bob,

I think it's worth remembering that this model was designed at 21'' and meant as a beginners model and sometimes simple designs don't enlarge well. I had the same worry over Veleta which was a 24'' 'simple' model and I enlarged it to 36''. It's not a scale model but I like it- and I like your Silver Mist. I think when you have put the portholes in and the hull is painted a light colour against the bright finish of the topsides and wheelhouse it'll look fine. You could add a rubbing strip which might help- and of course when painted there will be a boot top. It was a 48' boat so the figures look right on Vic's model.

I don't think you could call it a tub by any stretch of the imagination. I'm always a bit suspicious of statements starting with ' no offence meant ' or 'not wishing to upset anyone'smiley

                                                    Keep calm and carry on!

                                                      Thank you Ian

You are probably correct with your doubling up theory

I`m looking forward to fitting the rubbing strips……..They do improve a boats appearance

At the moment, I`m planking the top cabin, a dark colour, to contrast with the roof
