Now we come to the rudder space……….As feared earlier……..Not much room

Head scratching time once more……..ie…..The fun part

        Back shortly……With a solution

          Hi Bob,

On mine, I made the deck right back to the pencil hatching removable and made the aft part a grating, aft of a companionway- all removable in one piece. That way you get a bigger opening but still have a reasonable sized structure on deck. It helps with access to the rudder head.

I fancy the plastic chain idea, at the moment

I use those plastic tiller bars, the ones with a clamp arrangement (the common sort you get with the small med and large size brass rudder assemblies (tillers available separately). These can be adjusted (having replaced the standard nut and bolt for a 3mm bolt and nyloc nut) so that there is sufficient grip to operate the rudder ok, but the rudder post can still be pushed in place. This means that you do not have to have sight of the tiller post as you can fit the tiller by feel. It is also dead easy to adjust the rudder angle afterwards, just hold the tiller and tweak the rudder

No hatches necessary therefore, no chains or anything complicated. Yours is a big craft so loads of hand room at the rear.

Can't really replace my existing setup at this late stage

Have been away for a few days, so progress is a little slow at present

Here we go……. A rudder mech for confined areas!

Easy to install and easy to adjust

The drive sprocket is a clampable friction fit on the servo

                    Hi Bob,

What advantage does this system have over a normal arm and linkage arrangement? Seems to me there's more to go wrong.

                      Hello Ian

I started out with the intention of going the old arm and linkage method

The gears were going to be the hubs for the pivot arms, then the chain idea clouded my thoughts!

I like the sprocket and chain idea though

                      Bob

Bob. The chain drive would have been most appropriate on the G.E !!
Try a nylon tiller next time, they can easily be fitted by feel only, and are a doddle to adjust later on when testing. Ashley

                            Hi Bob,

It looks nice and technical and why not? Is there much backlash in those gears and chain linkage?

If backlash causes a problem, I can always fit a jockey pulley

I'm pleased you like the idea afterall

                                  Hi Bob

Back from Spain, great time there planning future projects, kept up with your progress with my Tablet while sitting by the pool, tough life but somebody has to do it ! Your rudder chain linkage is taking the project to the next level, where do you get your sprockets & chain ? I thought it maybe a better option to a running line on my sailing barges sheets.

                                  Regards Ray

Welcome home…….Hope you didn't watch last nights football travesty!

I'm pleased you like the latest offbeat rudder feature, with the chan drive

The chain came from Hobby's Ltd

I fitted a chain drive in the Louis Heloise to activate the sails

The sheet anchors were simply clipped on the links

As already mentioned, the idea came by accident, when trying to make use of a pair of plastic gears, with the intention of turning the teeth off and using the hubs!

You could perhaps incorporate the idea into your Moonbeam build…..As the winch drive and rudder mech?
