Unusual frequencies

I have just bought myself a 36mhz 4 channel transmitter and I want to know if anybody has had any problems using this frequency in the UK.

36mhz is a common channel “down under” for boats and my understanding is that in the Uk it is a shared channel for surface models and civil defence.

Thanks for the information however I have been looking at the Uk frequency allocation chart and 36mhz falls into the band for model control but is not in the strict 35mhz model aircraft band.

That’s a very fair question; it must seem incongruous that I should bother to try using the 36 MHz transmitter when there are so many good and more formally acceptable units available.

I just like to push myself as much as I am able, which these days isn’t much, and investigating using this frequency for model control (in the UK) is giving the old grey matter something to do.

I bought the brand new 4 channel transmitter off fleabay for 1p (I also bought a 4 channel 40MHz unit as well) from Hong Kong so there is little worry about wasting money and, if in the fullness of time it transpires that I cant legally use the 36MHz unit then it will just gather dust in the shed meanwhile I am having some harmless fun pushing at boundaries.

As I said it might seem incongruous to some but others will understand that I am filling up my days with challenges rather than just sitting and waiting for countdown to start.

36 Mhz is approved for use here in Australia for aircraft, but can also be used for boats. All my radios are on the 36 Mhz band, as they are the ones I used while flying RC aircraft. Most of our club members also use the 36 Mhz band. Any flying fields are a long way from our boat lake, so the risk of “shooting down” an aircraft is virtually non-existent.

 

Many years ago, I bought a 35 Mhz radio from England, but had it converted to 36 Mhz to comply with the relevant legislation covering the use of radio control equipment.

Whilst 36 mhz is common in Europe and Australia for model control in the Uk the frequency is used for short range audio / TV equipment and for civil defence / military applications.

I suggest that you contact offcom for their advice before using the transmitter.

Offcom have just confirmed that I can use the 36MHz frequency for model boat control so I am one happy bunny.

I am over the moon as I bought one 40MHz and two 36MHz all are 4 channel and each one cost me 1p (+postage of £6) all I have to do with the36 units is to reverse the selector switch for the speed control.

With the 36MHz units I can sail without having to worry about other users or having to wait until a frequency becomes clear.

The approved frequency range for RC model usage of 36 Mhz in Australia is from 36.601 to 36.659.

I have a brand new unused 35mhz fm setup and not allowed to use it for my boat because it might interfere with model aircraft. (what model aircraft, ?  there aren’t any where I live.            Do we all sail our boats next to model flying fields? I doubt that very much.              What range do model transmitters work to?        I don’t think its 20 miles or even 10 miles.         Do modellers fly their planes 1 mile away from them?  no of course they don’t, what would be the point in that.             So tell me, who makes up these laws anyway?       Someone who sails his boats in the middle of a model flying field, thats who.             Surely its all down to common sense, If my radio interferes with someone else, then theirs will interfere with mine, so I don’t do it.            Why don’t we have a national survey to find out how far away flying fields are from our boating lakes?       I’ll bet it’s quite a long way, more than a couple of miles anyway.             Love to hear from you.             Regards Foggy.

Well, like it or not, that is the law in the UK and it leaves plenty of frequencies available for us boaters. Obviously, if you live in the middle of nowehere then it isn’t likely to be a practical problem but it does mean that if you were to turn up with a 35mhz radio at a club event or show then  the other modellers would take a dim view of it. If you are a boater, why did you buy a 35mhz rig in the first place? It’s not as if 40mhz, 27mhz or 2.5gig sets are expensive or difficult to come by?

It was because of the problems and accidents caused by both boats and aircraft being on 27mhz that the flyers were given their own frequency of 35mhz when it became available. The Citizens Band craze at the time also had a lot to do with the change. After that, very few flyers used 27mhz. Of course, now that 2.4ghz is available we are all one big happy family again. 35mhz and 40mhz sets are still available but most people are now going for 2.4ghz except for the submariners as 2.4ghz won’t penetrate water.

You will be relieved to hear I’ve just fitted a Corona 2.4ghz kit to my Hitec Laser 6 35mhz Tranny.        So no more 35mhz.        Now I have a Futaba M series 27mhz Tx, a Hitec Ranger 3  40mhz  Tx, and a Laser 6  2.4ghz Tx.         Regards  Foggy.
