Excellent programme and brought back a few memories. I remember sailing around the Isle of Wight on Balmoral back in 1965 when she was still owned by Red Funnel. Also been on Waverley of course!

The program was an nostalgia trip indeed , having enjoyed both the Balmoral and Waverley in recent times the memory of my trips are as fresh as the Irish sea . The Balmoral will role on wet grass which makes for an interesting ride and if the sea is less forgiving there's plenty of space to enjoy a hearty meal.

I have read that working as an engineer on Balmoral is a difficult job. The ship is very narrow gutted and cramped down below. Now she is back in service I must try and have another trip on her. To be fair, she was originally designed for service in and around the Solent which can be choppy at times but not as much as the open sea in which she has been employed in recent years.

The programme was an interesting parallel to the situation in Lefkas, Greece where I spent a week last month. The waterfront is lined with excursion boats of all shapes and sizes and which all offer essentially the same itinerary around the local islands and compete for business during the high season. When times are slack, they collaborate to load all the booked passengers onto fewer boats to avoid sending boats out with too few passengers. Most of the boats are modern but we spent a day on this replica (sort of) greek galley which was huge fun. Had to wade ashore for the beach barbeque.
