      Hi all,

I’m not sure if this is the right forum for research type questions, so apologies if its in the wrong place.

I’m building the Precedent kit of the Perkasa, and I’m trying to find out what torpedoes she used and what colour they were painted.

The 21 inch Mark 20 fits the time frame, but I can’t confirm that these were supplied to Malaysia, and it seems older torpedo models have sometimes remained in service for decades with improvements – so maybe the Mark VIII**?

A follow on to this would then be what colour to paint them. The Tamiya kit box art appears to show them to be black with a painted yellow or maybe copper nose housing the warhead, but the only photos I can find show a red coloured nose – at least for a Mark VIII. I haven’t found any photos of a Mark 20.

It seems strange to have such brightly coloured nose cones on the torpedoes – did they maybe indicate inert test warheads or something?

I’d appreciate any information on this.

      Thanks
      Hans

          Hi,

I’ve done a bit more research, as for the type of torpedo I’m 95% sure its a 21 inch Mark VIII**.

As far as colour goes, I’ve learned that training warheads are yellow or red (international orange?). From what I understand, these are filled with water, and when they ‘detonate’ on their target the water is blown from the warhead causing the nose of the torpedo to float – this and the bright colour aiding recovery.

I’ll probably go with the yellow warhead then, as b&w pics of the Perkasa seem to show a light colour warhead, definitely not red.

Unexpectedly, the colour of the torpedo body has now become uncertain, as the pics I find show a dark blue colour, not black! I will therefore be using a dark blue.

          Hope this helps someone else.

          Regards
          Hans

Hi Hans. I do not know much about torpedoes. Builds other types of boats. But I I‘ve seen enough boats to be able to say that you build a great boat. Will be fun to see it finished. Ole

Thanks Ole, I’m trying to get it done by summer, and I’ll post more photos then.
