I thought it would be nice to do a paddle steamer so as the most tedious bit would be the paddles I’ve been fettling for a week making a pair,(see album) so now it’s time to make the hull.

I’m thinking 1830s or there about, lots of deck bits and a big funnel as well as some masts, lovely jubbly!

Won’t be sailing Sunday as it’s mother’s day and I have to whizz down to Hampshire to see ye olde pirate mother!

Runs in the family I’m afraid 😂

Seeing mum this afternoon, so free for boating today!

          Fantome, Seahawk and larger lander,

. I realise it’s only actually 7.30 really but it is a bit grey out….disappointing after all this nice weather. A bit breezy too but this won’t bother the three boats.

Nippy at pond. Fantome glitching? Too cold to fiddle at pond side. Have stretched out Ariel wire and put a capacitor across the motors. If no good will have to suppress each motor individually, poss ground motors to prop tube. Hasn’t been an issue before?

            Seahawk fast on 9.6 nimh.

            Away next Sunday.

The short version is to ensure that the length of wire from the motor terminal to the plates of the capacitor are as short as possible. If there is any wire between the capacitor leg and the motor terminal, there is a transmitting aerial which will let out the interference. The purpose of the capacitor is to shunt the interfering signal away before it gets to the transmitting wire.

Thanks chaps. Oddly enough I have almost never had an issue with interference. I have in the past bothered with capacitors, but mostly not!

I will stick some capacitors between the motor terminals first, as suggested. The ones I have will not quite make it between terminals, hence the one fitted, but I might as well do it properly….so I will lengthen the legs a bit and insulate the wire.

It is a bit odd, as the previous esc did not glitch on exactly the same non-suppressed setup, but I have found some esc are more sensitive than others.

Project H in for editorial perusal, so with any luck (and assuming the bribe has not been snaffled in the post) ( 10 Bob note) you may see it in x months time and wonder why I bothered, or indeed wonder why you are all not making them as well. How many must have been made I wonder? Did anybody actually make on?  I would not recommend the original power plant however as it was, according to my oversea source, a bit feeble. MB magazine, or at least, part of an article in it was the inspiration, and he knows who he is!

Are we talking about Project H's or 10/- notes? You don't half talk in riddles sometimes, Ashley!

BTW you might also solder a 0.01uF ceramic disc capacitor from each of the motor terminals to the motor case. Check all the plug/socket connections by wiggling them with the motors running, and give the Tx a good shake at the same time. The type which uses separate cells in a battery compartment have been known to harbour all sorts of gremlins in there. Indeed, any loose or intermittent connections can cause what appears to be radio glitches.

Project H I was talking about!

Will try motor terminal caps first and if that doesn’t do it, try motor case ones. Might have to use the motor mount screws for that as can see difficulty trying to solder on case…they are jolly thick.

DM did I appraise you re project H? If not I will mail you.

                        Ashley,

Having experienced trouble soldering capacitor legs to a motor can, I sorted the problem by clamping a copper strip around the end of the can, trapping the capacitor legs between the strip and the can:

                        hlbygg43.jpg

You can just see the ends of the legs sticking out either side of the large ground wire.

I also used this strip to ground the whole set-up to the water via the propeller shaft, as David Harrison says should be done in the article that Dave M. linked to above (cf. bottom of p. 1 and top of p. 2 in the article).

                          Hi all,

Sunday sailing was a chilly affair, Noel and the boys arrived about an hour after me with lots of speedy stuff. Nice to see Satan’s leaf blower again, still sounds like a hive of angry bees!

I lasted till my knees turned blue and my fingers stopped working, flipping spring ha!

On a warmer note, just finished cardboard planking my paddle steamer hull (see album) a few tweaks needed and then it’s smelly fibreglass time.

Now a question. I’m thinking of making this steamer around the 1830 era so would the hull have been made of wood or steel plate?

Answers on a postcard or just post it here.

Almost certainly wood Ricky, maybe with a bit of cast iron worked in possibly. Steel wasn't used until much later.

It was quite a good morning on Sunday – the leaf blower was hassle free and just worked. Its useful to find that a tad below half throttle will maintain it on the plane after initial full thrust acceleration, which is very satisfying.

I also took the foam Ekranoplan and put the big 5000mAh 3S into it. This suited it a treat, giving a long run time, and ballast enough to allow a bit of air to get under the wings, but not actually enough to cause a nose up and flip. It was terrific. The skeg could do with replacing with a rudder because the turning circle is still impractical though.

Just a heads up, it’s the Chestnut parade on Sunday so parking might be more of an issue than usual, also the car parks will be shut from 12.15 till 1.30 so if your late leaving you might not be able to!

Looks like a no go Sunday.

                                          Chilly to start.

Manchester going well on 14.4V and new ESC working ok. Did a slow pass and saw port prop was stationary…investigated, tightened up coupling grub screw and…..Woah!!! How fast!!! Megga.fast. Fastest its ever been, although OBVIOUSLY I drive it at a scale speed all the time/mostly/sometimes/hardly-at-all. Didn't try anything else out.

Great morning boating last tues with Richard and Peter.

Unfortunately the sun went in and although warm it was slightly overcast so no snaps were taken. The gear refused to fire up on the London at first but after taking out and then re-plugging in the leads to the rx all was ok.

Tomorrow I will `ave the Manchester, Shorty and Ferry. Possibly summat else if I get a spur of the moment whim, but I will have a car full already. Bound to be busy at the park as it will be a nice day so I shall be there sharp to get a parking spot.

As an aside, some of us will be attending the Kempton steam museum Stationary engine and model boat show on I think Sunday the 19th May. Richard is finding out more info, like if we can troll up and sail or have a table to display our MAGNIFICENT boats on, or wot.

The chap I know who is organising the Kempton do has been on holiday this week so will track him down after Easter.

Will see you bright and early tomorrow!
