I have been getting rid of the white space for Ashley, not sure why it happens.

That's only the superstructure Bob, although it is a handy sized model….

I hadn't realised it was quite so small! A lovely little job, and I hope you get many hours enjoyment out of her. As a matter of interest, what sort of control installation have you put in? I ask because I would like to get into RC, but know nothing about the various bits and pieces involved. That's why my boats have always been free runners (plus it means I get exercise running round the pond, unless I can talk someone into catching for me.

Well I did say it was small !! It is not finished yet Bob, soon, and I will post snaps of the two together as soon as. Now you can see why the bits are not quite as sophisticated as I might like.

The Sans Pareil was 340 foot long….so that's….340×12= 4080 inches or 21 inches at 1/192, so at the GE scale it would have been approx 40.8 inches at 1/100.

Control equipment is…. one micro servo (pictured) for the rudder, one Mtronics 15A ESC, one Planet 2.4Gig receiver and an ordinary 6 cell Nimh "c" size battery pack.

Motor is a speed 280. This is a bit racy, however the smaller 280 motors need a smaller voltage, and I do not have a smaller voltage pack (and don't want to buy one specifically), and a 360 motor which would have been just right sits too high off the floor….and I could not be bothered with making a special mount….ALSO and more importantly…the plastic couplings were for 3mm (shaft) and 2mm (motor) and the 280 has a 2mm shaft !

I think the blank bits of post are me when posting snaps…will try harder next time. Colin is full of puns.

The anchor chain has been painted black now. The ships boats are completed and drying in the late sun and the steam boats look super with bell ended brass funnels (2.5mm brass tube flared with a centre punch)

Rear admirals walk railings in place now. 6mm paper strip lined out with a fine felt tip pen, tabbed underneath and stuck on with wood glue. Very fiddly. The paper is a bit WHITE and I will tint the clear varnish a bit to tone it down.

Will give it a quick outing tomorrow although not finished.

The men. One of the reasons they look a bit big is that I have left the bases on them, probably 3/4 of a mm or more thick. It all adds up, still, they do add to the spectavle. The ships boats all attached and finish off the superstructure a treat. 10 in all including a second class (not third) torpedo boat with admittedly oversize torpedoes but theres a limit to how small I want to go. The ships boats will get some oars at a later date, 0.5mm styrene rod bunched, glued and painted.

Tomorrow…..German LFH, lct and Sans, possibly something else.

LFM that should read for the German lander.

Reading a mag in bed containing models (as you do) BOATS of course, I was perusing GG`s very small TBD build and he used the ends of plastic kit sprue for the cowl vents. A good idea and one which I didn't think on, as of course unless you HAVE a kit handy it is something you would not be able to use. HOWEVER I happen to have a couple of kits hand oddly enough and I am hoping these will furnish me with sufficient suitable bits for cowl work. They are possibly the most awkward things to make, cowl vents. Fortunately for my TBD being that much larger I found a plastic plumbing fitting that was suitable!!

CAr all packed, will be off to `t pond in a jiffy.  NB picture shows TBD without the men added later. A couple of chaps on there make all the difference!!  Access to the hull is via the lift of raised centre section. This sits on a combing and thus far has been 100% waterproof despite some heavy sea. I dislike the lift off hatch/deck arrangement as it is not quite so good at keeping water out, however at smaller scales of course it is the only option. My boat is also a tiny bit wider than scale again for the access and improve stability.

Sans went very nicely. Much too quick if on full throttle but only to be expected!! Didn't quite have the right trim and it was down on the bow a little bit and more throttle was causing the front to go under……However…this might even be the case when it is ballasted correctly. A problem on anything else, not much of a problem on this one. Even crawling along was probably much to fast a scale speed on it.

Surface duckweed precluded a longer sail….just a few mins today (with the Sans) as I didn't want green muck all over the deck.

LFM and LCT ok as usual. Peter with assortment of large boats down and Chris with the Daring.

I have plastic kits, none of them has the round sprue reqd for cowl production so scratch that idea. Tomorrow I think I will tackle the ensigns (although we are off to Mum`s for lunch and I will be all somnolent afterwards at home)

                Such is life.

Have not tackled ensigns, but did make/drill/glue/paint flagstaffs for the ensigns.

While I was in the shed I dusted off the Glorious box and glued up the plastic motor couplings with silicone sealant to quieten them down as they rattle. The Sans coupling was noticeably rattle free having been siliconed already.

Trevor mailed me a few days ago asking what the easiest way I knew to make life rings, about an inch outside diameter. I had to confess I know of no easy way to make lifebelts. Suitable tube with the required wall thickness is hard to find and even then it looks just like a large washer. It is getting the oval sort of coross section that is the issue. A bit like making cowl vents. Making a master and moulding them I suppose Is the way to go, assuming you waqnt that many.

Trevor eventually hit on the idea of Nylon washers. These are not quite so square edged and have more thickness than a steel one. Plus they are white (in his case) which is handy. Gluing might be an issue and I thought perhaps the red bindings could be applied (paper strip) and then glue these bits to the bulkhead or woteva.

Washers have arrived and look promising, will need to knock off some of the edges, with the red banding they should look OK at a distance.

They are substantial enough to drill and pin in place,

Traditional way to make non standard life rings is to suck Polo mints until they are the right size.

Colin. You are so right. When they make 2 inch Polo mints we will be sorted yes and probably have diabetes from all that sucking.

I've started making 4nr life rings for Cullamix the hard way, now I know why people buy plastic moulded jobs

1" diameter scale 2' from 1/8" ply painted white line bound on with cotton, what a fiddle !

Curtain rings seem to be the obvious choice but getting smaller sizes is an issue. Ray, yes, just buy them.

Sans now virtually finished. Just some oars for the shipsboats nee3ded and the flags, wot I am doing. And just a few tiny things like the ends of the mast ropes that need a final trim. Cowl vents I cannot find, I may just leave them off. The bollards are just 6x3mm oblongs of black plasticard…look fine from a few feet away despite not having any knobbly bits.

It does look pretty in the sun.

Very neat Ashley, an attractive model in the Victorian livery.

What size vents do you need? I have some spares:

2 x 7mm stem 15mm cowl up to 52mm high – can be cut down.

                                  2 x 7mm stem 11mm cowl 26mm high.

Need a bit of cleaning up.

A very nice little ship. Thank you for sharing the pictures with us. It has just occurred to me, regarding vents, that something may be found on the SHAPEWAYS 3-D printing shop site. They seem to have everything needed for every scale of model railway, and I believe once the programme (?) is made the items can be resized as needed. Crew might be found there as well.

Curses, now I'm going to have to look myself!

Chaps. Thank you. Hopefully next Sunday I will have this out with the Nelson. Neither ship has been built to strict scale of course, but superficially they are a match especially regards hull size and superstructure etc. The difference in size is stunning,

Colin , thanks for the offer. The vents I had for the Titanic were about 12mm high. I could do with some about perhaps 20mm and 12mm high. I have not seen any this small (or at least, I did see some that were cut-downable but of the wrong style). I think the boat will not necessarily be incomplete without vents. I may find some eventually.

Thanks chaps. No one believes they are the same scale unless told, the difference is just so big (or little perhaps).

Both ships a little bit high in the water, I had been fiddling internally with the Nelson and didn't rebalance it properly. The Sans needs to be a bit high on account of the small size.

What next eh?? besides project W, there are several other interesting vessels to portray at 1/192 scale.
