Forgot to add…both Peter and Richard had put very small sharks fin turn tabs underneath their Tups and again the difference in turning rate was very noticeable.

A good result especially for my Swordfish which had all the steerabilty of a marble on ice.

        Hi Ashley

Nice to see the fin made a difference.

May try a wing keel/ shark fin next ????

6ff37234-5606-41bc-bfef-1e24ad7bf683.jpegHi Harry and an interesting thought. We, and certainly I, have various models that may well benefit from a winged keel or even blade foils but generally we like to keep the weirder craft as “original” as possible as regards to the hydrodynamics/ original design features.

The Seagulls are a case in point, in that they don’t “fly” but might well lift more with something underneath.

Another issue is control. Once these things lift off the water they can become very unstable and can easily fall over unless there are long rudders or fins to keep them upright, further compromising design.

The bumper in the Blackpool picture does seem to have its prop pointing forward. It would of course work like that…how well I don’t know of course. Be interesting to see what the builder thought of the plan…ease of construction..clear instructions etc.

The suggestion of a “Dalek” top for the bumper base had me thinking, and I have drawn up a Dalek top, based on the Dalek in the last few series. Fortunately it’s a bit dumpier that the original versions but even so comes out at a stonking 14 inches high. I doubt that I could make it light enough so that it would stay upright which is a shame.

I suppose it could be a bit smaller but even so it could be 10 inches high, still way too tall.

Its a shame…I was all ready to konker time and the universe.

              Hi Ashley,

Depron is the answer, and Hobby store sell polystyrene balls for the dome/top, may need a little more ballast in ballast in the base to counter the extra windage " Exterminate " !!

              Regards Ray

I think windage could certainly be an issue. What about a smaller Dalek to sit inside the bumper boat?

A Mekon would look good too although you's need to be of a certain age to appreciate it.

I thought of depron Ray, but then I had ANOTHER thought…exciting.

A smaller Dalek might not look so..menacing…and having a Barbie towering over a Dalek would look silly (!). The new thought is a very slightly smaller Dalek, to use most of the base but not all of it, bringing the overall height down to 11 1/2 inches from 14.

To deal with the windage, it would be a simple matter to make a small bracket to hold (for instance) a six inch long by half inch diameter bolt vertically underneath to act as a counterweight. Being round it shouldn't affect the manoeuvrability, and any loss of thrust from being (sometimes) in the prop-wash would not be noticeable.

Ooooh…wonder if it would make a plan add-on???

How about making the Dalek hover? The base lends itself to a hovercraft skirt well but what about one of your bumper car drives instead of a propulsion propeller?

A novel idea Richard but it’s just the height of the thing. My Dalek in the drawing, to scale using a bumper base, is simply huge. I am sure a hover base would need to be twice the size and look odd.

You could simply use the base as a self contained propulsion unit, putting something right over the top of it, but not using it to actually help the ..whatever..floor, just simply for power.

Any number of specials could be made…Croc heads, swans, Loch Ness monsters and so on. They would only need an oval cutout underneath…easy.

I am continuing with my Dalek idea today, we will see if it can be made light enough to work.

Will continue with diddly dum diddly dum diddly dum Wahh Ooooooo

Looking very Daleky so far, ish. As usual the paint job will be the deciding factor. As it’s based on the restyled new series one, plain block colour is the order of the day, and prosaically the Acrylic with best covering power will be the choice, bright blue. The White Yellow and Red are not as opaque as the Blues that I have.

If this one looks ok, and is stable enough for combat, I will re-draw and make a ‘classic’ Dalek top for the second hull in light blue and Silver.

Even if we did simple flat outline Daleks they would look good en-masse.

Derek the Dalek weighs approx 200g, that’s 100g LESS than that fat lump Barbie in the car body.

THis means that I could put 100g of lead under the battery and hopefully there will not be a stability issue.

Derek painted in vibrant best Dalek red after all, as the new gloss red acrylic covers very well. Red was the colour of the soldier drone Daleks in any case. Waiting 20mm stick on dots before he (it?) can be glued together…head, centre and body.

                                Looks very mean.

….or not because of the rain.

Took a good video of Derek on the water yesterday, and although the heeling is a bit alarming, there appeared to be no chance of capsize.

Working on the second one now. I may call him Clive. He will be a first generation silver/light blue one.

There is an artistic issue of course regarding the base dimensions, which are a bit long and thin, compared to what is needed, and although Derek looks ok, this iteration of Dalek was a bit dumpy, whereas the first lot looked much taller and thinner.

Having made the skirt section, centre and head, when balanced on top of one another, it was much higher than Derek, by almost a couple of inches, so I have been forced to cut bits off. Clive is now only about 1/2 inch taller but still looks passable.

Oddly enough Derek only really looked like a Dalek once the round stickers had been applied as the finishing touch. I have light blue ones ready, and Clive will be silver with the dome, ribs behind the eye (stalk) and dots blue.

Sigh, whist gluing bits on me Dalek early this morning my mum rang to say she was snot happy in the care home and she wanted to come home (she was at home). Yesterday she saw her sister on the sofa, who died 5 yrs ago.

BUT as I was round this morning ready to call 111, the district nurse came round and said sound like a UNIRARY (or something) infection, so thats alright. Anti-biotics ordered by nurse, hopefully pickup tomorrow…..

Dalek however. looking better after a bit of minor surgery to correct the blaster area which i decided didn't look quite right. Whether it looks "right", well, sort of, and there are obviously design restraints in play here, however they look quite good on the water.

Yes my old Dad had a urinary infection in Hospital, he changed personality totally much the annoyance of the nurses, We all become our parents, parents at some stage if we are lucky. My Mum bought a bungalow round the corner from us 10 years ago when my old man passed, she was happy there on her own from 80 – 90 but the wheels started to fall off so she is now happy again in a carehome with new friends and its only £1000 a week

This is a really unpleasant situation as all of us who have been in your situation know. I assume your mum has all the Attendence Allowances etc that she is entiteled to. It doesn't help much but every little bit helps.

Your mother is lucky as she has you who cares about her which can make an enormous difference. You keep an eye on her level of care and are there when things go wrong. You are being a good son. The ones that I feel even more sorry for are those without someone like you. Imagine being 85+ and infirm but content in your nursing home & then being told that it is going to close or the level of care falls. What on earth do you do then?

Cheers Chris. Being near to mum helps here, I can pop over any time easily, and that makes a difference. Unfortunately my brother is in Oz and thats not so handy!

Having painted both Daleks (to change the subject) the silver one is woefully thin when viewed front on, so I am going to have to add some strips to the sides to fatten him up a bit, just 1/2 inch should do. Luckily the centre section overhangs the skirt by about 5mm so I can go out a bit without making the skirt look too conical. The current width is 4 3/4", the red one is 6 inches. I wanted to differentiate between models of Dalek, but I have slightly overdone it.

As usual, if i made another two I would make a few subtle changes, but there we are, thats hindsight for you.

they would probably make a good "alternative tops" article to add dissimilarity to yer bumper base!.They do look very striking.

BECAUSE there are grooves in the skirt bits to indicate panels, and these extension bits just look like a grooved outer section if you get my drift.

There is an issue however in that although Derek is a snug fit on the bumper hull combing, Clive would not fit on for some reason and some serious sanding and scraping had had to be carried out. He is a tight fit now, and I might have to continue scraping…but at least he won’t fall off.

Watched film “ Dr Who and the Daleks” with Peter Cushing last night. Awful, a travesty and more of a comedy. Considering the series was established on telly I don’t know why they went down this road?.

Went to the pond yesterday with my mate Al to snap Derek and Clive, however the sun which was peeping out at 9 o clock had gone in, although it was bright.

Skies are blue now, and if they keep that way I might pop down again at 9.30 ish to get some not ‘better’, but more “bright” shots. The mrs’s phone says next week we are due rain, rain and more rain, sigh.

Not received next mag yet but seems like GG has jumped on the in-mag mini-pullout boat plan gig! It’s a good idea, saves paper and can be in colour!! Only works for smaller craft of course.
