Ray and Ashley – may I steal a bit of your modelling mojo – cos you two seem to turn out model like Nissan car company turn out cars – one every 5 minutes I think. I am struggling to get back into me modelling – but getting there slowly every time I look at what you have built – you have built 3 models and all I have built is a fuel storage rack.

Nice models looking forward to getting some modelling mojo soon

Hi John. Don’t know what to say really about the speed of my building, however once I get into something I do spend time on it if you know what I mean. Most of my projects are built “in my head” as it were. I have an idea, I do a sketch, but the details are worked out in the old brain-box. By and large, I write the articles before I have even touched a bit of wood, and this focuses the mind on exactly what needs doing and when, or it what order, and of course I have experience. No doubt Ray is the same.

It’s only just 7 and I am up because I can’t sleep when it’s light out and have had breakfast and after a quick surf I will likely pop to the shed and fetch the latest top for my hull and take it to the loft and paint the railings in acrylic gloss white.

Today I will make two 6-pdr guns and paint them (superglue and Acrylics are great for getting things done), finish off the simple masts and paint windows on the conning tower box bit. And so on.

Moana rower needs a mod to stop water getting in, a figure on the ferry needs glueing back on…

We all work at our own pace! Ashley

                    Hi John,

I suppose the support of my wife in the time spent in the workshop is key to productivity and don't watch TV before 9.00pm , also a variety of projects, as you would guess I'm a model maker of boats, aeroplanes and trains so many projects are on the go at anyone time, I've never been been good at one project at a time, so as I lose interest in one another comes back on stream.

I never understand folk focusing on one type of model without variety but there are always different types within a specific field, sorry to Bob & Neil who like what they like !! but that is the wonderful thing about model making you can build what ever you want.

Off to Lidl now for the shopping, and Steaming in the garden today

I think as Ray points out well I dabble with a number of different types of model, mainly boats and model railways. When one feels a little stale I move to the other. This is also interspersed with tinkering with old motorcycles and playing with steam engines so I always have a variety of projects to turn to.

The downside of this is that I sometimes don't touch something for a number of months and then, when I get back to it, I forget where I was up to and what my intentions were with the project!

I’m with Ray, never watch telly till 9 o clock, it’s mostly rubbish or depressing before then. When I was working for a living early evening was always modelling time and that mostly has continued. We are creatures of habit.

Having recently bought a 1963 Velocette Venom which needed re commissioning to put back on the road has put my new build back a few weeks, but it’s good to vary projects and it stops the gray cells stagnating!

Ashley is a modelling machine, we can’t keep up and wouldn’t try. Every other week he turns up with something new!

hi ya all, I don't feel so bad now – or – should I say – I don't feel as though I have deserted the hobby. It just seems to take forever to get back into model boats – I wanted to originally begin another build – but – when I look around I do have several unfinished things on the go (as in model boating) and I wanted to do a build of the K7 Bluebird after reading Ashley's article. So, do I start this or put it on hold?

                          – on a side note though a lot of us must also do model railways, but, my other hobby is restoring vintage hi fi units which I have been doing for a while and

                          – looking at all this I think I am busy enough – having that unfinished 00 gauge railway in the loft. Ha hahahaha hey ho.

I am normally watching a film at 9 p.m. and that is past me bedtime come to think of it.

JWE. IF you wanted to build a Bluebird, although I didnt do a plan as such, you would be welcome to scans or hard copies of my drawings, mainly for shape and dimensions, and of course extra pictures.

                              John,

Don't feel you need to keep up with Ashley! Just enjoy what he does.

Us lesser mortals simply need to find something that interests us and proceed at whatever pace we are comfortable with.

I am currently enjoying a paddler build which provides a nice combination of relatively simple hull and upperworks but is giving me a lot of satisfaction in working out the propulsion and associated electronic arrangements. I am documenting it as a possible future article but progress is at a rate which keeps me happy and it will take as long as it takes so no pressure.

At our age you have nothing to prove!

                              Cheers,

                              Colin

All my models are simple things, lacking loads of scale detail. They are all either odd or stand-off scale, and this makes them easy to build. Also I get very keen and use all of a day if it’s warm to crack on.

The current work in progress, the M33 monitor top is a case in point. Guns, railings, masts and so on are all representations of and whereas they look ok close up, would not bear close scrutiny next to a gold award winning build that took years to make.

However, they would both look much the same out on the pond.

Big event coming up at Kempton steam museum May 14th, where the Bushy park boaters will wow the crowds with our fabulous alternative builds, dolls, toys and Barbies.

A Picasso boat…now there’s a thought…. melted in the middle and painted in garish colours. Some might say of course….

BUT, back in the real world and I am sticking bits on the Monitor top, and have been playing with one of my spare bilge pumps and a bit of drilled plastic pipe and plastic tube to test a theory out.

As it happens it’s a goer, but unfortunately cannot be another GP hull top as there is insufficient room in the hull for the pump, which is rather large. So: another hull will have to be made AND I might make it a 2nd GP hull.

As a clue, I might call it the “Sandie Shaw”…

                                                  Gold star for Ray!

If you can find it Ray that would be a help, but as usual I will be building “in the style of”. However the smaller details would be nice to see.

The real thing has (from memory) only one large and possibly a smaller second water monitor, with outlets on deck to plug manual hoses into. I have 8 or so firemen, vaguely American style, and they are 50mm tall, so that’s what will scale the boat. Once painted with red coats and gold helmets they will look the part (research needed on fireboat uniforms, but red will look nice on deck). I will be having MORE than two permanent monitors, for effect, thus the divergence from the MS.

i am sorry that this next one will not be “odd”, however it will be spectacular !

Yes, it will have to be a bit fatter than that or the force of the water jets will turn it over!

Despite it’s size, but probably due to its roundness, the new death ray on the Saucer actually turns it round (very slowly). Good old Newton, equal and opposite reactions and wotnot.

The water squirter on Trevors Fireman Sam small fireboat spins the thing at a really decent rate!
