Certainly boating. It’s v nice out.

Need to take pix of canal boats and gunboat. May try the paddler as well (not THE paddler, still under construction).

Will bung in a Barbie or two….

Although very sunny, the wind was wicked cold yesterday.

Unfortunately the sun is still very low just now at the beginning of the year so no photos were taken.

          Everybody's boats ran well.

No Tups were present, in a spirit of solidarity with the beleaguered Ukrainians.

Sigh. it doesnt look great for tomorrow, however as long as its not actually raining I will be boating.

I have a Moana to test!!! She is powered up and sitting in a comfy box just ready for transport.

Yes Ashley there is quite a lot of info on it if you play around with it. Now living in the 'west country' on occasion if locations crop up I watch the looks of disbelief when I say Edinburgh is Further west than Bristol

Despite the very bright sun, it was b####y freezing…that wind. Also despite the modest wind in the garden it was blowing hard at the pond with a severe chop.

Needless to say Moana didn’t like it and on a test run in the side stream didn’t steer at all well and was just blown all over the place. I have seen a couple of things that need doing, however, so not all in vain.

Only sailed the ferry today. They are like corks these landing craft, and the high front (ramp) is great with big waves.

Busy making storage box for Moana, and popped to Wickes to get 3.6mm ply the other day.

Havinga heavy duty staple gun (manual) that fires brad nails is fantastic for quick assembly.PVA,,tacknail together…et voila! Painting takes the time, white emulsion..takes ages to dry when it’s cold out.

Band gear being PAT tested today. I may look into doing it myself next year. PAT test courses to certify you as “competent” are quite cheap, and small second hand pat machines are not that expensive and easy to use.

My wife was polishing a table this afternoon that has a box construction with a glass top and a ply base. We bought it in Italy around 25 years ago. As she polished the inside she pushed the base out clean! Close inspection revealed that it had been fitted with a nail gun but the nails had no heads so required very little effort to push the ply off the nails!

Make sure you have heads on the nails Ashley!

The Mrs bought me an electric nail gun years ago, which fired brand nails up to 30mm long, and I thought? What use will this be? The nails are really thin and as Richard alludes, the brads have very little in the way of a head on.

However, it was sooo useful for tacking things together, and pinning beading in place etc.

Unfortunately it jammed terminally awhile ago, but we found a stapler from the wife’s brothers effects which can fire 15mm brads, and while not quite as useful as a proper gun, does really well for small stuff.

Jolly good job the Tups were featured in February’s MB, the “From Russia with love” headline would have been v embarrassing, given the current malarkey.

Bit blowy today but only chilly. Sailed the Invincible aircraft carrier. Too breezy for Moana.

Made a decision and am getting rid of the carpet carrier. It’s sort of the same as the other one but less good. It goes all right mind you and is quite stable. I was going to give it away but the aircraft and helicopters on it cost a modest amount so I would let it go for £30 just to cover these items. I would remove the esc and receiver but leave themotor and rudder servo in.

Its not worth advertising generally really. I might put a sign on it at the pond perhaps?? Likely i will scrap it and just keep the deck, as of course that’s what it was designed as!!

I have been considering another very vintage odd build, looks something like a speedboat with oil drums at the front. however having done a bit more research I found a drawing of it from Poular Science mag, May 1936 which I had seen before (and forgotten about) and remember now that it was clumsy and not as attractive as the cover artwork depicting it going very fast. Now there’s a thing.

it would have been a “what if” boat, and never built, not that it is a reason NOT to try, but the thing in retrospect is porky and unattractive besides which I can’t see it motoring along anything other than slowly.

                                    Such is life.

Not like you to be considering an unusual odd build Ashley! smiley

Is there any mileage in changing the design so that it looks more like the artwork by altering the proportions etc.

I know that you usually like to capture the essence of a model rather than slavishly following a particular design.

Chris. Although a sort of straightforward build, there are several issues which would be difficult to resolve without some major redesigning.

It would probably be easier to build at a larger size than the other oddities as it would float better, but then it would take up too much room.

Ashley, put yourself into the Art Deco era in the United States and design something from scratch as though you were in that time. Using your experience to guide the design into areas you know would work rather than some of the pure fantasies that you have been considering I think you would be in with a far better chance of success. Put yourself in the shoes of Howard Huges and then let your imagination run free! Or what would Flash Gordon have used as a boat?

By the way I did like this months Bluebird article and so good to see a ducted fan used rather than a "cheating" propeller!

Thank you Richard. I am looking forward to some flak over that statement (props)!

Liked the Popov…glad to see it had the right number of props! I have a Model shipwrights magazine with a Popov in it (it was only very small), and they had a rather interesting pivoting docking system for the boats, a bit like rake. You drove the vessel onto the Tyne’s and let out/added water to the counterweight and lifted the vessel out the water and swung it over the land.

The thinking of a stable vessel able to pivot quickly to a new bearing was admirable, however the practicalities of the thing outweigh whatever benefits there might be.

Weathering not something I do, so very interesting to see your blurb Richard. I let my boats weather naturally….

….as to making things up….I am never satisfied if I make something up. It is never quite as want it to be, and also it seems like you are just making something for the sake of it.

A Saunders Roe SR.A/1 flying jet boat (obv not in my case) IS something on the list though, but the small inlet and split exhausts….tricky.

Will take the carpet carrier out on Sunday (my birthday) and put a "for sale £50" sign on it….never know…a few more snaps and a bit of video??
