Sunderland all back together.
Becc flag now on a bit of string (linen thread actually),and attached to the rear mast spar. Lower end has been tethered to one often shroud deck rings, as the deck is removable and the tiller/crew group get in the way of a central securing point. I have no proof but it seems to me they must have had to adjust the flags as they twiddled the masting/sail arrangement, as no one point on a sailing ship really does for hanging a flag from, unless it’s at the very top….?
Luckily I have no sails set, so I can put the flag where I want, and hanging it off a spar ensures the flag hangs down slightly, as if it was up the top of the mast it would tend (from my testing) to either go left or right, and not rearwards where you would see it in profile…obviously ignoring that the wind will blow it about a bit.
on the subject of flags, I have still not found a definitive answer to which flags go on what mast on a three masted vessel. There could be a station flag (red or blue for instance), admirals flag/pennant, union flag or white ensign to fly.
Unfortunately mostly all you have are paintings and illustrations to work from and these all might have artistic licence.. anyway, I think I said all this when I was building the London.
i have a special buffet lunch to go to at the Hersham centre today, followed by a bit of dancing and then the Ballroom class I run !
