The other answer with clinker clenched lap boat is keep it in the bath ! the planks will expand and seal all the leaks, we once rented a holiday bungalow at Frinton on Sea with a clinker dinghy leaked like a sieve to start with but soon took up in the sea, most wooden boats like to be left in the water I believe. (Bath maybe not such a great Idea )

Radical solution from Ray..keeping your boats submerged!!

Boating today good. London went well, but Stingray blew a fuse…and then another (when being held at the dock) so I used my wattmeter.

Bearing in mind that it has been out twice now, no probs, on a 2s Lipo with no incidents…..

There is a 20A Esc at the moment in the boat and I put a replacement 30A fuse in for the test, I measured 25A on the wattmeter and stopped before the esc blew up….and that wasn’t even full throttle!!! How come it has been working ok so far??? Will fit a larger esc and fuse….30A..will have to do another wattmeter test first.

Again gents, many thanks for the input. I had a look at the Captain Tolley's web site and I must admit to being very impressed. It certainly looks like a pretty amazing product and would be perfect for soaking into the small gaps of a clinker boat. I can't believe I've never heard of it before. The video where it 'soaks' right across the piece of glass is very impressive.

I completely agree with the comments regarding flexibility and, while my model is fairly small so will not flex very much, the proximity of a steam plant will certainly not help.

So I've got some EzeKote on its way, next job buy some Captain Tolley's.

Ray, I have read about old wooden boats leaking when left out of the water for too long. It certainly makes sense. I'm sure with my model though that a good 'soaking' to get the water into the planks will result in a warping beyond all recognition!

This is the one worry about my big destroyer…as the bottom planks are so thick (3/4” ) then any movement will be correspondingly big.

i probably could put some inch and a half screws in it which might help!

Ashley, you will almost certainly get away with a current above normal operating currents for a short duration. That's why fuses are designed to blow as quickly as possible to prevent them. However there is still a fraction of a second time delay before the fuse heats up to rupture temperature so devices are designed to withstand a high current very briefly. I'm sure if you stayed on full throttle for any length of time you would be rewarded with a burned out ESC!

Just another thought, do you think anything might have tightened up slightly? Lock nut loose, coupling shifted etc..etc.. That could explain why it has been OK up to now. If you disconnect the motor is everything nice and free?

Richard,I will check the jet unit, but there are no locknuts to adjust! The motor has a solid grub screwed coupling and that’s that. Adjustment, if you can call it that is simply by using the coupling. The prop is bolted to the other end of the short shaft.

Two other things have occurred to me, firstly…the limiting flip switch on the new T5 transmitter may have been on its limiting setting for the times I have used it previously (it’s very easy to knock and you don’t notice it)? Or the battery which had been used so far was not low, but less than the 8.27v I checked today’s one before using.

I did pump grease into the unit before I used it (only been used three times so far) so I would have thought unlike

y it has gone “tight”??

But that’s all theorising! I had not used the wattmeter before so no idea what it has been pulling in the way of amps. A 50A EnErG esc has now been plumbed in, and I will check the above items before using again….

A possibility, but The grease filled chamber can only be 60 or so mm long, and it’s silicone grease I which is much less stodgy than the usual sorts, however I will check later on to see if I think there is undue resistance.

Without the extra grease the unit was leaking…drip, drip, drip and that’s no good!

Twiddled coupling on Stingray and it is very “free”. Will get the current tested next Time.

The plan Sunday is to take the big ‘un down to show the original owner. Just made sure it worked but l/h propshaft a bit noisy. Think this is just because it is unloaded, as it was quiet for its last run.

I think our Noel used Tolleys and was impressed.

Fishy back together with new lifting surface underneath the tailfin, much neater than temporary bolt on one..plus…as I have painted it black you won’t see it underwater and it does not ruin the line of the green tail.

Yes I used Tolleys on my old Wavemaster that was suffering dried out joints and plywood that was dry and delaminating. Leaked all over the place.

I did all the internal seams and corners with Tolleys, then rubbed down the outside, repainted and finished with a couple of coats of Eezee kote to seal it all off. No more leaks.

All true Noel. Mind you, it’s probably dried out again as it’s so long since it was in the water……

Doing a sketch/plan for the new speedboat. Was pleased about receiving a picture of the builders blueprint, but the blueprints do not tie in with the actual boat, and neither do the cross section ones or the flag-packet sketch. So, I have done the usual and used pictures for reference, although the man said it was 19 foot long by 7 foot wide which is a nice size in inches for the model. Obviously simplified some things and have sent a snap of the sketch to the man for comment on approximate likeness.

I’m currently building a Santa Maria about 3ft long which will compliment my Caravel Templar ship. Proving to be a bit of a challenge so far, still, keeps the grey cells active 😱

As above. Big destroyer slowed down after a while so was taken out the water and the right hand motor seemed to have virtually seized….BUT this was just the coupling binding on the plastic casing (how.??)

wait now to see if the hairline cracks under the waterline get any worse…..

Other than that, and allowing our puck to drift across the pond into the far shore (rescued by Peter and his waders) everything was dunky hory.

The destroyer motor issue is in part down to the slippery plastic mounts, as there is only so much you can tighten the screws before breaking the plastic. I have moved the brass ends on the shafts to give a good clearance and moved the motors forward a bit.

At the pond there were more than a few comments on the “little men” on the ship, and it just reinforces my decision to put the men on (despite being slightly too big), as it does enhance the model and also gives more of a sense of proportion.

New airboat coming on. Construction is a bit haphazard at the moment, as the front half resembles a boat, the back half a , well, almost a slipper but with a tall narrow cabin.

At the moment I have a recognisable deck (cut out centre) with a sloping rear bulkhead (going down, not up) and a long flat section aft, all glued on edge only!

Its one of those things, once the sides and bottoms (or tops, for the rear end) are in place the thing will be solid, but before that a bit..loose!

Front sides now on, rear cabin area in place. The flexibility of 0.8mm ply is incredible, and as hoped, it has curved not only around the cabin horizontally, but also in a curve upwards, also considering the cabin is curved from the front to back. This will give me a nice single surface (rather than having joins and loads of filler) to get nice and shiny/flat.

The bow upper surface has a parallel sided section and than a rounded front. The rear bit can be one piece but the front may need a carved bit of foam.

Due to uncertainties with the propulsive method I intend to carry out a first run without the “bonnet” on (cling film) so as to be able to make drive-chain adjustments easily.

Nice day, going up to London to meet the ex-works chaps for a half-a-shandy…

Last Sunday was good.

i have my 2nd Covid jab tomorrow am so will not be boating unfortunately.

New boat coming on. Sanding, sanding, sanding and filling, however the tricky side slopes are coming on, and the under-bow bit is all good. Possibly start on the cabin tomorrow.

The last 12 months have taught us one thing Ashley, the pond is going nowhere, it is there when we need it, if anything, it has given you more time to to bring together your (to some) weird & wonderful takes on the hobby of model boating, take no notice of those who think a flying boat in not a boat & should be classed as an aircraft, I think that your "out of the box" thinking, is what makes this hobby, what it is.

As regards Ashley's non flying boat I find it very sad in this day and age after all we have been through that there are still those amongst us who have nothing more constructive to add than complaints.

I am encouraged however by the fact that I am certain that a high percentage of these very same people do not actually produce very much themselves so their complaints do not really have value.

It reminds me of the time as a youngster when I was starting out in motorcycling. In those days if you passed another motorcycle on the road you usually acknowledged them by either a wave or a nod. When we stopped one day at a Little Chef, probably for an all day breakfast, one of my friends asked me why I had acknowledged the scooter we went past earlier.

I simply said because he is riding on two wheels, just like we are!

Long may Ashley continue to push the boundaries of creativity and continue to entertain us with his ideas and his enthusiasm. The world is a far richer place for having his non flying boat in it!

Most of us in our modelling tend to 'copy' by building boats from plans or 'assemble' when making kits and that is fine. Ashley however is a true experimental modeller, he innovates and boldly goes where no miniature floating object has gone before! Enterprise indeed!
