As Ashley posted a bath test isn’t ideal but a 1000kv motor running a 30x prop on 7.2 nicad through a 30amp esc gives a quite impressive punch, for how long is a question that will be answered at a later date.

there was precious little heat from the esc even after holding it back for a while under power so that bodes well.

Bollard Pull + Amps sounds great.

like everything else it will have to wait.

Thank you. Reminds me of what it used to be like here!

The stabilised camera makes an enormous difference. Is that just the standard GoPro feature?

Harry reminding us that his motor suggestions result in some very fast boats!

had a very quick sneaky 2 min test of the extra very secret project and gosh does it go!

Not fast per-se, but the manoeuvrability was truly outstanding and exactly what is needed. The boats will never be fast considering their shape however the thrust from the 1000kv/x40 combination was spot on. Power was instantaneous and I was impressed that it didn’t fall over, and bashing it into the bank a few times was also ok.

A couple of things to consider from this but nothing major, a few tweaks is all.

The mrs has been getting our veg from the “odd box” company and oddly enough, the hull and top sit nicely in one of their veg boxes as if made for it. I may hold off making a ply box as likely the card one will last a good long time. As I plan to make a second boat the economy of the boxes appeals to my frugal nature…

Looks like there is light at the end of the tunnel for a return to the pond !

Will start a new boat today…another build of the very top secret project ! The hull will be as plan again but I am altering the top, not there was much wrong with the top, but Having built the prototype, I can see now what I would like to alter. Just a few tweaks.

The new shed led lighting is indeed fantastic and you don’t realise just how long it took for the old lights to fire up, and same for the garage. I have installed a 10W led PIR (motion detector) floodlight outside the shed door and that is great, I can see down the garden now, as the light from the house food didn’t reach that far…bushes and so on.

I also bought a 30w non pir flood to replace the 400w house fitting…significant saving…and now confident the 30w one will be as bright if not brighter than the halogen. It looks nice out today so will see if I can fit it. Only needs the wire to be connected, and the Lap light has a really easy method of connection.

                  Hi Ashley

The LED lights are a big saving on the power bill and a better light.

I replaced all the halogen ones in the house two years ago.

The workshop/garage I have not done as yet.

I do not plan working at night as it's still day light until 8pm in summer.

Harry. All the lights in our house are LED now, nice and bright, the way to go. Light up until about 5ish here at the mo’.

However the bench sander has just blown up, blowing the shed feed fuse and tripping the RCD, but no other damage. I have had this for years and it’s a wonder that the motor has not died before with all that sawdust about, despite the extractor hose). A new one from machine mart is £116. I could probably get a new motor, but I would want to change the drive belt as well, and the bearings in the front roller are a bit screechy, so I have an inkling That the spares will almost amount to the cost of a new unit with postage…

Had a very quick test of the fishy today. Surprised, would have bet stiff money on the back sinking under power but no, seeeeeemed to be ok. The entire hull sort of disappears under a big bow wave, and I will have to raise the interior combing.

No power measurements yet but the x40 on 7.2v is too much for fishy, and after some e-mail conflabbing here, it seems for a variety of reasons it will be too much for the very secret project as well.

Accordingly, I will buy a batch of S35 m5 props and this should be more than enough for care-free handling and will mean that bystanders having a go will be able to just keep the throttle full on (as they would of course) with no drama.

likely an LNG bulk carrier will be next after this lot…

I also changed every single incandescent lamp in our property with an LED equivalent lamp. Estimating very approximate usage across the year for each lamp and comparing each lamp with the savings in energy it generated I estimated that it would take me around two years to save the initial investment off the electricity bill. Added to that the fact that the life of an LED lamp is infinitely longer than a normal incandescent lamp the savings are huge.

I did this around four years ago and have changed maybe six lamps that have failed. I used to change an incandescent lamp around once a week!

What I now want are some good LED replacements for the large fluorescents in the garages but I think I’m going to have to change the entire fitting, which is a shame. When all six, six foot tubes are on together they use nearly half a kw!

Initial investment, including 12v power supplies for many of the halogen lamps was in the region of £350.00, so admittedly high cost but still well worth it.

I wish that we could convert. The problem that we have with converting is wall lights that use either candle or golf ball bulbs. We have always used 60w (42W halogen) bulbs which are around 625 lumens.

We need 7W+ LED candle/ golf balls which don't have the bottom half of the bulb as white plastic. We tried one with the bottom half plastic and the shadows were awful.

If anyone has come across any 7w+ clear LED candle/golf ball bulbs please tell me.

LED replacement bulbs are available to retrofit into the existing holders, you do need to swap out the starter too.

Have done this for a four footer that was flickering.

Try the usual chain stores or eBay.

                              Trevor,

Yes, I've done that in my kitchen and the LED tube is as good as the fluorescent one for illumination.

However, a bit of reading up suggests that unless the ballast in the fitting is bypassed then you won't see much, if any, reduction in energy consumption. The LED replacements come with dummy starters which mean that it is basically just a straightforward user replacement as you might have done for the fluorescents. The instructions don't mention bypassing the ballast as a competent electrician is needed to alter the wiring in the fitting so they obviously won't suggest that the average person tries to mess around with that.

I had a look at the ballast in my twin tube kitchen fitting and while I could see where the change probably needed to be made, to do so safely would have entailed removing the fitting to work on it and trace the wiring. The kitchen light is not on for long periods so I was happy just to replace the tubes and starters. In a workshop you would really want to get the energy costs down so it is a different situation. You could be better off with replacing the whole fitting with a LED batten which is what I did for the two in my garage and the one in my workshop. They give out much more light than the fluorescents plus you can select the colour temperature which is important if you are modelmaking.

Colin, I have not bypassed the ballast as I was not aware of the need, will investigate if it is worth it. Thanks

Just noticed Lidl UK will be having four foot led lights for £15 each next Sunday, I will be getting one for the shed.

                                      TODAYS ELECTRICAL.

When it gets a bit warmer I will bypass the ballast in one light and see how it goes. It appears the tubes are fed from both ends and I suppose whereas they need to be, led ones don’t need to be fed from both ends.

Bypassing ballast as per Colin’s link is easy even if you just re-do the internal wiring completely.

While I was at it, I have replaced the 500w Halogen external floodlight with a….wait for it…. 30w (!!!!) led flood, and can report that although it is not QUITE so bright, there’s not much in it and the light is pure white which makes up for any shortfall, for a saving of 470w..well worth it.

ALSO, got round to fitting a sensor led flood down the end on the shed, something I have been wanting to do for ages, a small 10w one which is well bright, and with the two of them on the garden is adequately lit up, all on 40w.

                                      TODAYS BOATING.

First half of extra secret project hull made yesterday along with removable access hatch that the superstructure is based on. Will “plank” the sides today and likely make the top as well. Only a lander could be easier to make (all straight cuts).

Have seen two of our chaps secret projects and it’s like deja-vu…seeing someone’s boat that they have made looking exactly like your own is weird, even if the tops differ somewhat.

Just seen another intriguing device, a cyclonic filter dust collector. Looks like atapered vase, the hoover connects to the top and the sucky hose to the side and presumably there is a whirl action inside whereby all the sawdust falls to the bottom into a tin or whatever the unit is on. Obviously this (presumably) doesn’t get all the dust, but if it stops say 80% of the dust going in your hoover that’s a result? Some interesting videos on you tube.

yes outside lights do corrode up. Brute force may be the only answer !

                                          Ashley

Just found a “homemade” cyclone filter using nothing but two angled pipe fittings and a plastic barrel (wine/beer making sort). He demonstrated a 90+ dust removal efficiency!!  Got to be worth ago? It will make your hoover bags last much longer and also make it more efficient I suppose.

I must replace my sensor operated light at the side of the house that covers the dustbin. Not having a convenient power supply I fitted a solar powered one but it's started playing up. But now that I've replaced the vented tumble drier with a condensing one I have a nice big hole in which to run a cable outside.

When we bought the place we inherited a five headed “street lamp” that stands on a base in the middle of a gravel drive. I would not have bought it myself and there are now two lamps out so it looks bad. It has also been very badly assembled so it really needs a complete strip down, cast iron parts rethreading, new fasteners etc…etc… then a new paint job. Hence it’s been put off for rather a long time!

Boat wise, I have now finished two “very secret” project boats. The second has had the led treatment at the front utilising two clear oval car reflectors. Both have flickering leds on the pickup but I would have liked a bit more flicker to be effective.

Two Mattel dc comics figures have been purchased for two additional alternative superstructures, and the appropriate stickers sourced.

Two 5v small 40×40 computer cooling fans are on order, one to put in the fishy to waft air around the inside of the head in an attempt to stop misting, and same for the saucer. Being 5v they will just plug into one receiver channel, easy. I will try simply having the fan inside the saucer dome first, as an item of “equipment”, and it would be good if it works in keeping the condensation down, but if there’s no effect some major internal construction might have to take place in order to actually such air in, in order to push air through the dome.

If simply circulating air in the fishy does not work then there’s not much I can do, as there is really nowhere to hide a vent.

i can report Noel is doing stunning work on the big carrier (radar and masts), Richard and Peter have now made secret projects ok, and even more impressively Trevor has made serious inroads into clearing his shed and making space to build his two secret projects!

An easy thing to build, the secret project, second only to a lander and I reckon a warm weekend would have it mostly done, barring painting and final fitting of propulsion….unlike a lander, where using an acrylic grey undercoat would see one finished in a week-end!

I have identified four boats that will be on the “get rid of” list, eventually, when I run out of room.

The small Type 22, Boxer; the Glorious; the Jersey OPV and Fantome. May be worth selling the Jersey as it has a Kingston mouldings hull and the Fantome, but the other two I think will be broken up unless anyone wants to take them away. The Fantome alone probably takes up 4 boats worth of space.

The alternative secret project drivers have arrived and are great but their proportions are a bit..hmmm..odd and even more stretched than the originals. I JUST have enough wood to do the two new tops luckily enough.

My first covid jab is tomorrow so that’s good, I hope I don’t get any grottyness afterwards. I am cycling there so it’s bound to be pouring with rain, and I need to allow time to cool down or the zap gun will say I have a temperature!

Mulling over continuing with the go hull making more tops for that. Unfortunately the top two things on the list have rigging and masts but I reckon I can use the same masts for both which will be a good saving and as Neither of the masts will have sails that’s another saving (in time).

I sail with Ashley on a regular basis( not recently of course) and most of the time I have no idea what he’s up to! So don’t feel left puzzling over some of his posts, were all in the same boat. Haha.

No doubt he’ll let us know what he’s up to eventually or in Model Boats magazine!

“Go” hull should have been “g.p” so no doubt that clears that up a treat !!

i do not have sufficient thin ply for alternative tops to house my new very leggy alternative drivers..I have 1.5 and 2mm which might be ok with some steaming to bend them into shape.

Seperate thread on a rediculous ruling created under “water is densel. Truly unbelievable.
