      Hi all,

Having washed and polished my car, painted the garage door, dug various holes in the garden (all good exercise) the call of the shed was too much so I’ve started a new project after checking I had enough materials. I’ve always fancied a three masted Brig, so I’ve cut a keel and frames ready for planking. Should keep me out of trouble for a few weeks.

Anybody else starting a new boat? (Apart from Ashley who’s in constant production!)

Luckily it is blowing a gale and trying to rain, so would not have been able to put much on the water today.

Richard, Buzz boat and Kevin to get off the drawing board, also another fan boat to knock up.

Will try to remember to get some photos for a virtual show and tell.

Hail, if I am not mistaken, rather than rain!

Went for a cycle down `t towpath to Walton and the river looked more like the ocean, with a good flow one way and terrific wind the other. There were some big swells on the surface and breakers.

All boats finished barring Waterwitch and Bluebird to paint. AGAIN managed to donk a Bluebird sponson sadhdjfgjjrfghjebfr!!

Loads of foam and some lite ply….several EDF in a box, a high speed brushless and flexidrive also in another box….

Fancied a Saunders-Roe SR-A-1 flying jetboat fighter….but access to internals is an issue unless made `of a size` and this would mean a more powerful fan than I have currently spare. OR there is the Cobb jet boat…an interesting shape…I do have a spare 12 blade fan assembly.

Have a standard lander (body only no fittings) going spare, made on spec but now unlikely to be taken up due to the virussy thing, if anyone wants…could make a ferry or wotever.

A Crusader out of foam would be good. It was an interesting looking craft.

Have been widening the beam of the sponsons on Satan's tooth pick. Now almost double the width, plus the plank of balsa ties them together now and should make it a bit more robust.

            img_20200330_151808004_hdr.jpg

That ought to prevent any further rollovers!

Noel. Yes, those weights will keep it stable!

The Crusader is a bit like the Bluebird in reverse..three point hydro..one forward/two rear, with sponsons at the back and not forward.

i may make a few sketches and see how access looks and so on. Making it would be virtually the same as Bluebird. Issue would be to make the inlets large enough for an edf whilst maintaining the overall look?

Just found an 8 year old forum thread about building a crusader! A certain Paul T is rumoured to have a copy of the Jetex plans….PT?.

"the gang" is virtual boating at the moment via e-mail.

All and sundry are ploughing ahead with builds and modifications to new or existing boats.

Promised a mini heat wave over week end so may finish spraying Bluebird if I have enough paint in the can!!!

Found a couple of decent images of Crusader in none other than MB mag!! just the job.

                  Have been making radar aerials.

They are not exactly fine scale but look correct from 10 feet away (like the rest of the vessel!)

                  img_20200402_134836890.jpg15858318277168714999673375965919.jpg

Type 285 and 291 respectively.  Now I have to do a MFDF antenna for the destroyer and that will be its major fittings done.

                    Solder, brass wire?

Should look effective on the water. Good work!

Bought a 1022 radar kit for the 1:96 Manchester, but there were so many small bits I gave up. An adequate (on the water) Ariel was achieved with aluminium mesh and a few bits of card..

plus on subject of Crusader I wonder if Ashley you are aware of this:

                      **LINK**

Radars are done from bits of wire mesh chopped into little H sections and soldered to pins, and some aluminium cable clips bent to form the reflectors on the 285 yagis.

The 291 X shape one is then glued onto the inside stick from a cotton wool bud.  These are useful as they are hollow and can slide over a mounting spike (and can be removed  to avoid damage in transit), but are also a little bit bendy so will flex when knocked rather than snap off.   The yards on the tripod mast are the same, the bit of flex saves them from breaking whenever you nudge them.

I think I might’ve peaked to early as I’ve run out of materials to go any further, still it’s something to put on the ‘to do’ shelf.

Nice Richard. I see you are going for a "London" look. Hull looks good, nice shape. No prop?

Shame about the materials…what have you run out of?? I think on-line deliveries are continuing.

I seem to have loads of stuff for the Crusader, including the 2mm and 3mm lite ply which fortuitously I had bought extra of when last at Addlestone models.

Filler may be an issue at the Upper farm shipyard, the stuff in a small tube, as mine seems to be a bit dry. I have P38 and fine surface Polyfilla to be getting on with. Also my Eze-Kote is almost out.

As it is a lovely day I know what will happen. Loads of people will be out in the parks, sunbathing and so on, and the authorities will get stroppy and close them. I purposely didn't cycle to the towpath or park yesterday because of that.

Out street has a "tea at three" party this afternoon where we sit in our front gardens and shout across the road whilst drinking tea and eating cake!

The fine weave worked well and it should be nice and watertight, the next step is a thin layer of body filler then another stint rubbing it all down. It’s a lark this boat building!

Another 3 weeks of lockdown? At my age I was told to stay in for 12 weeks, which I reckon means June.

My brother in law (65) has just been told he is not to leave the house for 12 weeks starting now!

Perhaps you young uns will get boating first!

I have already got two boats that need to tested!

                                                      I am a mere 62, although that's a top secret.

The way I see it is that most of the population at some point will get it, all this lockdown stuff is just to slow the rate down. A bit of a lottery….

At some point, we will all be let out and stand the risk of catching it, unless we go out in full protective gear for a year until they develop a vaccine.

I play in several bands, and run one, and I cant see that any of them will be rehearsing before the end of summer, and realistically the whole year will be written off as afar and band jobs will be concerned.

I have currently two that need testing, and will finish the Cobb Crusader before we get let out to play….so that will be three!
