      Hi Brian,

Sounds like the "experts" don't want any competition from the new boy !! 😀

      Practice makes perfect

        Your probably right Ray.
But being honest I just enjoy the relaxation and change of routine. The challenges that come with it are different so there is lots to learn. 🤔

The position of the lake is pretty poor and suffers from variable wind direction to no wind at all. So if I get to learn there I should be ok when I go to a different place where wind is constant.

Not sinking is always a good thing Brian, live to sail another day and all that.

As the weather has been pants this week I thought I’d knock up a little ships boat for my Dying Gull, something I’ve been meaning to do for about 6 months. See album.

Plank on frame, using thin balsa for the planking with thin plywood for the keel and frames. Suitably weighed so it will float on a tow behind the ship or on choppy days can be stowed along side the hull. With wood stain and some weathering it’s blended in well.

              Today.

Cold and blowy. Myself, Trevor, Richard and Noel (with small boys) down

Richards new row boat looks good on the gull.

was pestered into trying Walrus out, with the new foam chine on the bottom and having twin 7×4 props on, DESPITE the wind. Predictably it would only really turn to starboard, and the new chine has done the trick in that (pending a calmer day) there should be no trouble lifting off.

No tests have been done with a 2s yet, and it may be that a 2s with the twin prop is adequate for the fast-taxi look without the ‘in-air’ look….?

Similarly I forgot to take the tail planes to try, and these should make all the difference…one way or another.

Finally, Richard tried the Templar boat out. One would not believe that something with sails would not sail, even a bit…but this does (not sail).

They made them like it, so one would have thought it would be a goer, but?

                Good luck geezer!

deliberately horrid picture of Wally attached.. on dining room table and unfinished.

nope…can’t get it to go from mini I-pad. Is in album.

Richard, that looks good. I have never done a plank on frame as it always looks too time consuming, however—The next yacht will be a 30" Sparrow which is just that construction.

When i have made a start i will post pictures.

Thanks Brian, I find it the easiest way to build a hull although clinker is a bit more tricky to make it look the part. I’m all clinkered out now as I had to re plank the Woody rowboat when water got into the cardboard and made it go all squishy. He now sports some thin 3 ply with lots of varnish and paint. Ahh the joys of model boating!

Added spray rails from 2mm sq wood strip to Walrus. Painted bottom and half the sides whiteyesterday, and today have spread a sort of green-beige paint on bottom and sides (lower half).

The divide is a sort of slow wavey line, I had thought hard about this..some have camo completely down the side, some have a straight line, some a high frequency wobbly line, and some just look like someone has tried to do a straight line freehand.

its funny but as I was splashing paint on the bottom, I thought I would cover the white on the side and all of a sudden I got carried away and had finished! Looks good or will do with a second coat.

As usual the painting takes forever, and there are roundels to stick on, Lewis guns to mount and the decision as to whether I should rig the wings. Would look better I suppose, however the wings are what you grab hold of when lifting, so…?

Ah ha. On the PC, snapped picture of Wally drying beigey-green paint on the dining table, as you do. Picture turned upside down for better viewing. Joint of two foam bits underneath deliberately NOT filled as this bit is likely to get bashed now and then and any filler will crack, plus it is underneath so not seen.

Nifty wooden radial engine not seen in this view, looks dead good on the back by the prop.

Looking forward to a bit of snow soon so I can take pictures of ZiS….. or zat (as it were).

That's a grand job 😀 are you sure you weren't an aeromodeller in previous life ?? Out of interest where does it balance? 30% back from the leading of the wings it will fly ok 😯

Ray. It balances somewhere in the middle of the wing, if I hold it upside down..that’s wing middle on body..as the wings sweep back. No battery of course.

footage on you tube shows Walrusses as being tail heavy in the water and only really lifting the tail up very close to the moment of water release. This is much like my other flying boats, only they don’t have the power to actually take off. This one shows signs of good tail lift, however it has only been in twice yet; firstly with no under hull foam, and then in very blustery weather. The tail flaps will be the thing for controlling attitude at speed and I need a flat calm day for. Experimenting.

There is another “boat” walrus on you-tube, Made by Steve of Hinckley mb club, and it does what my others do,and looks ok, Same channel..Elsie Raven also shows a twin engined sort of flying boat in camouflage, and a Saro London effort having difficulty. Like the look of the saro…

Just possibly I might like to make a different hull for the BFB3, something varnish-woody colour to look nicer that the square box that it has now (the hull was made as a tester for the A90 Ecranoplan, and re-purposed at the insistence of the small boy), perhaps re-engining it with a brace of small brushless motors?

                              A few statistics…all without batteries.

Sunderland, weight 779g, power 4x small motors uncertain make, perhaps 40 watts overall?

BFB3, 660g, powered by two speed 280, perhaps 20w or a bit more?

bha 940g power two speed 400 say 40w overall?

                              Ecranoplan,550g, park 370 brushless inrunner 3700kv (yes!) say 60 or 70w.

                              Walrus 700g, 1450kv outrunner, 160w

so. A step up for the Walrus… I may get 4x Graupner speed 320s for the Sunderland as they have flat sides and just about fit in the existing cowls, are also 2mm shafts as per that fitted, and I bought some dinky 3 blade props a while ago that will look good. While I am at it, a pair of J Perkins 480s would replace the JP 400s on the bha, and I could change the props from 4×3 to 4.5 x 4 for more oomph.

oddly enough I seem to have more air props at home than boat ones, but the air boats need more testing out and experimentation.

Ashley (I must get out more…)

                                BFB3 rebuilt

Better picture of bfb3, having been altered to two more powerful motors , ish,

Twin rear rudders, now in direct path of the two push/pull props wash, which made a big difference to the control forces available. Extra foam was added underneath as well, which lead to about 4 sets of wing floats being made before they worked satisfactorily . Such is life.

Ray, yes lovely looking thing. Would really need a light plank on frame job done on it due to all those curves.

Loads of much earlier stuff with angular sides out there that could be quite handily made up.

Just wondering now if its worth keeping the bfb3, as Berengar does not come to the pond now and of the flying boats, its the least good, as it were. I hate breaking stuff up but it would be impossible to post if anyone wanted it but was too far away to collect (minus the figures unfortunately).

Likely cold tomorrow, but have wrapped sparkly lights around the Ferry for a bit of xmas cheer.

Was a bit brisk, but mainly very blowy.

Ferry (with lights) Was going well..oddly enough barring a bit of rolling, the landers are quite weatherly. The Midge was also going very well, another weatherly and fast craft.

But, Richards Crusader boat still not performing, to the concern of all. I think that the next step may be a bigger rudder??

Roundels have been applied to the Walrus and look good…BUT…despite being Becc ones, the yellow band on the side ones is uneven round the edge…only noticed after application… a bit disappointing.

. They are also a bit shiny and wonder if they will stand being varnished with an acrylic Matt varnish?

The JIF is finished and being trimmed for racing, the DF65 is the same and now i am starting a sparrow. The sparrow will give me the full set needed for racing on a Wednesday with Rofwacs at Batley.

I have never made a plank on frame so i am looking forward to the build.

My poor old steam engines are really on the back burner, but there for better weather, the sailing can be done in all weathers – provided there is a bit of wind wink.

Ahh wind, there’s either too much or none at all in our neck of the woods. Our pond also suffers from diffused wind due to the surrounding trees, makes sailing a bit of a challenge sometimes.

Good luck with your plank on frame build, you might find it preferable to other build techniques I know it suits the way I build my stuff but then we all have our own ways of doing things.

Ok, Santa hats all round tomorrow?. I have spares and will bring some!

will be bringing Sunderland and Christmastized ferry.

i think too late to order stuff now but after Christmas will be obtaining some Graupner speed 320s for Shorty, and a pair of 480s for the BHA, to be used with more aggressive props than those fitted.

As Colin has noted, HMS London is featured in January MB (thanks Martyn!) and you can all read about the months and months of plank-on-frame work that went into the build. After all, how else do you create something like this?? You could marvel at the mind numbing task of painting upwards of 70 crewmen and also wonder what I did with the keel….

                                                    gloves and scarves tomorrow chaps!

I won’t be there tomorrow, aged parent Christmas food parcel run to do. 😬
