The return of the Model Engineering Exhibition at Doncaster MES

It has been announced that the National Model Engineering Show at Doncaster Race course will be hosting the 2019 MEX competition better known as the Model Engineering Exhibition between the 10th 12th of May.. This will include all the usual categories of model boat classes. Details and entry form is available from the Doncaster Model Engineering Show . For those who have missed out in the past from entering because of location then now is your chance . Since 1907 the MEX has been the UKs premier event.

Good to see that the competition has been revived. The new Northern location means that it will be a lot easier for many prospective entrants than when it was held down South and I do hope that people will be encouraged to put their models in for the public to enjoy and hopefully give a boost to our hobby.

 

I was invited to continue with my long term judging role by the organisers but unfortunately this year the short notice means that I will be away at the time but Dave Wooley will be casting his eye over the models and I'm sure will do an excellent job.

 

I know a lot of people disparage competitions these days and are reluctant to enter but events at this level really do showcase the very best of marine model making and deserve to be supported.

Its good to see the competition has been revived and it will be interesting to see how many entrants it attracts. However he timing of this show conflicts, to a certain extent, with the CADMA model boat show, held across the road from the racecourse at the Doncaster Deaf Trust site, just 3 weeks later. Its a pity the organisers of the two events could not come to some arrangement to either merge the two events into one or move one of them to an earlier or later part of the year. It has been noticeable that since the model engineering exhibition moved from Harrogate to Doncaster there has been a gradual but marked reduction in the number of model boat clubs attending it. It is also a big commitment from exhibitors as it is a three day show and you need to set up your stand on the day before it opens so you have to find some very enthusiastic club members prepared to give up three and a half consecutive days of their time, or involve a 'part time' team spread over the event.

We have attended and enjoyed both shows at Doncaster over the past few years but, alas, the Model Engineering Exhibition also clashes with the Fleetwood vintage Marblehead weekend so unless the weather forecast for that weekend is awful, we will be spending it chasing Skippy or China Boy up and down the lake.

I have been attending the MEX over many years and the big issues often quoted from those living up North , has been the distances involved travelling down to the South East and having to spend three or more days at the event. Over the years many voiced the opinion that the MEE as it was known should be held in the North .Well now is your chance it's going to be in the North . Although this is short notice and there is also a Model Boat Show at Doncaster three weeks later . There is only one MEE/MEX it still remains the event to enter .

Speaking of distance travelled, my brother-in-law, George Punter, is taking his model Saunderson and Mills tractor to Doncaster this year, all the way from Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia. He exhibited it at the last MEX where he won one of the top medals, and was invited to return this year, an invitation he gladly accepted. He is originally from Rodbourne near Malmesbury, Wiltshire, but has lived in Bundaberg since 1975. He still has many friends and relatives in the UK.
