As a newbie to model boats and to this forum, I am hoping that some kind soul can help me.

To get me started in model boat building, I was given a kit of a herring drifter – "Formidable"

The kit company – whose name escapes me – is now no longer.  The kit is all complete except for a part they refer to as the bow post – which is supposed to be in 9mm ply.

As there are no 9mm ply parts at all, I am lost as to what this piece looks like, what it’s purpose is or exactly where at the bow it goes.

Can any of you fine people offer any help?

        Hi Cyril

Nautically speaking there is no such thing as a stem/bow Post It is simply known as the stem’

Because you do not mention the method of construction e.g Bread and Butter, Plank on Frame it is difficult to help especially as you give no scale. 9mm. ply is quite hefty.

Plank on Frame kits usually have a one piece keel with slots for the frames. In most  of these cases the stem forms part of the keel. Occasionally the stem will be a separate  piece and fixed at right angles to the centre front of the first frame. Whatever method used, the stem is there to give an accurate profile of the bow.

Hope this helps and good luck

          Thanks Ian,

It is an old Marvon model 1:35.  Everything is complete with the exception of the "keel extension" and the "bow post".  Both pieces the parts list state as being 9mm ply.

It is of GRP construction.  The plans are not that good at all and do not show these parts.

I’ll keep trying to find info for a while longer then I’ll probably re-box it, store it and start over.

            Hi again Cyril

Strange that a GRP hull is not complete. I can only assume that it is complete with an internal keel and internal stem and keel extension which are glued to both the keel and inside the hull. If this is the case you should be able to gradually build up a profile of both sections using a profiler [looks like a double-sided comb] or a vertical measure and, using internal calipers measure the distance from each vertical mark to the stem. trial and error should achieve results.

            Cheers

            Ian

              Hello Cyril

I know your request for info is a bit old, but this link may help. If your model is of the sailing type of herring drifter, then the bow post, may be the bow sprit, thats the long pole stickingout from the bow of the boat. This carried a forestay rigged to the top of the mast and in real life can carry an additional sail, If its not that then like you I am stumped.

The keel extension may be the bit attacing the rudder, but again not certain….good luck I am also a novice and am attempting a build of a River Clyde 1960’s pilot boat.

              Cheers…..Jim
