      Bob

The children are referring to the kitchen unit door that forms the base of your new stand and how the model looks like an oversize handle.

(Ashley please note how I have resisted the knob related puns)

Bob, I am tempted to throw the bamboo away and buy some decent hardwood planking when I get to that stage. I know it adds to the cost, but it should be a great ship.

Keep up the pictures. very encouraging for us newbies.

          Len.

            Hi Len

Don't think hard wood would be suitable either!

Some sort of soft wood may be ok?…….Like Pear?

The planks are only 4mm wide x 1mm thick and special planking sections may be impossible to purchase

Have you made any progress with your model yet?

Very Spring like up here in the North, but a bit parky!

I don't need any special woods now, as I've used the Bamboo stuff……..lBut thank you very much for the tip off.

Working on the top deck at the moment, and makes a nice change from planking!

                  poop deck.jpg

The strips along the deck are the back walls of the dummy gun ports and will be painted black, shortly

Planking the top section is the next job

No info about the scrag end where the keel will fit, at the moment!

Planking the gunwhales is quite interesting, as you can see the end in sight!……But only for the time being!

The top five planks need to be fitted neatly, as they can be seen from the inside!

                    gunwhale build.jpg

Note the tools needed for planking…

Pencil to mark the pin positions

Bradawl to make the pilot hole

Pliers to pick up the pin

                    Small hammer to finish off

Not forgetting the PVA of course

                    Your comments are always welcome……….Bob

                      The top planking continues

Some of the top planks are tapered at this stage, and since I had`t followed the printed "blow by blow" instructions, it was rather tricky deciding where these tapered planks occured!

I used a magnifying glass to count the plank positions on the photographs and are now marked accordingly on the hull

                          Hello Larry

i've been planking since early January!

Nearly four months!…….Got about one month to finish the first layer, then comes the fine veneer

Not looking forward to it either…….that'll be make or break time!

At the moment, I've put the model to one side

The endless planking is doin' my 'ead in!

We have reached a critical stage now and the gun ports are being worked on, which looks extremely delicate and fiddly. Covering the hull with P38 was a slight mistake, as the nail holes are used for positioning the gun ports

Better to leave it at the moment and watch the official build blog

Hi Bob...I am new around here, hope you dont mind if i jump in on this one. I can see how it looks building a weekly project as expence over all is more than a kit build. I as you did, i looked at the Victory as a project for winter and saved up the magazines and parts, all the parts are in the series, but it does jump about as they want you to wait for the next weeks input. So this is why i started another project while collecting the weekly magazines. So started with the Endeavour….all parts and magazines collected. Now collecting the Sovereign of the Sea, but as you say it will be expensive overall, if you done count in the read and ideas in the mags…. have three pics of the builds in each stage….Best regards….Ian

Hi Bob.. Decided to collect the parts for building the Victory about four years ago and realised it was better to let the build go forward and get a little behind as you can see the problems being solved on the Deag forum. Took time out to build a shed start buying the tools for this very interesting hobby. As i can see by the amount of projects you have. I think you have been building for more than four years !!!!!!! I was walking round the Fairhaven lake the other day and decided to look at a radio control project for the winter and see how i go with a tug . Something that will fit in the back of the car…no big masts, no balast problems, I hope…lol…………………………….. Best regards…………Ian

                                                  Hello Ian

Tugs are very popular projects and there is a vast range to pick from

Where did you get the idea that tugs don't need ballast?……They need plenty of ballast to get the hull down to the waterline!

50 lb of lead is quite common!

                                                    <<

It was an article on a scratch build, the chap said wished he had built a tug not as much a problem with ballast.

I will hope to start with a kit build more instructions and itemised detail on fitting the prop and servos.

As a kit will mean cash up front, will also look for something not to big so will fit in the car boot.

                                                    Any thoughts gratefully received…?

The selection of a kit tug would be best left to other members of the forum?

You could visit a few boat club shows and decide for yourself?

There is a nice show at Colwyn Bay this Sunday, if you live close enough?
