Being a bit of a dinasaursurprise I can never resist an old wireless set. Found this one on a car boot sale. It is a World War II main receiver from a Lancaster bomber. I restored it inside and out, and brought it back to almost new performance. Lovely old set.

What did you power it with?

I built an external mains power unit that fed into it via the three pin socket on the front bottom right. The earth was common to one leg of the LT (AC) and HT negative. The 2nd pin was the other LT, and the third pin was HT positive. I used about 250 Volts HT. I believe that in the aircraft, the power was supplied via the 24 Volt system through a motor generator. I removed one of the direction finding valve holders, and replaced it with a 6V6 output stage, including a matching transformer. The jack socket front, bottom right was the speaker socket. The red socket was for the aerial. Excellent performance. Underneath my home-made aluminium connection box, bottom right, the original Jones plug remains as it was. That is so whover ended up with the set could restore it to its original configuation if they so desired. same with the DF valve that I removed. I did not clip out the valveholder and circuit, but bent it backwards and insulated it off, putting a new valveholder into the vacted hole. Again, if the new owner wants to resore the DF section, they can do so with a minimum of fuss!

Here is another "slow electrics" production. A one-valve receiver using a 1930s HL2 triode. 2 Volts LT and 45 Volts HT.

Nice diversion Bob Wilson. I've got buttons and you're pushing them. I have amateur radio call-sign G4FAS and at one time had a T1154 which was the matching transmitter. Now very nostalgic about the era of Practical Wireless. And my thanks to Bob Abell for his timely heads-up to this MB thread. GR

variable capacitor.jpgI remember pulling a T1154 to pieces in 1959. Awful difficult to get into it!angel

I was never a UK radio amateur, because they would not give me a license on the strength of my 1st Class PMG that they issuedsad Eventually, I purchased one for £5 on the island of St. Helena, South Atlantic Ocean. And became ZD7RW/MM Maritime Mobile from passenger liner RMS St. Helena, on which I was the radio officer.

It was CW only on 14,060 using a small Howes kit that had about four transistors in it. Furthest I got was 6,000 miles! Soon lost interest though!

Here is a variable capacitor that I made myself. It turned out at exactly 0 – 300pF. I have never been much of a scholar, so I didn't try and pre-determine the value. I just guessed the size of the plates and that is what it came out as!"
