Skylight clyde puffer

Has anyone on here built skylight from drawings from the planking method? Although plans recommend bread and butter for the hull, I’m thinking of doing plank on frame from bulkhead line drawings, as I’m worried it will cost a fortune in balsa wood with bread and butter. Am I making the right decision? I’m not a very experienced builder.

Hi Lee,

Which plans are you using? The original ones in 1968 (I think) recommended bread and butter but the James Pottinger free plan in the December 2017 issue of the magazine included the hull lines to facilitate planking.

Have a read of the several Puffer builds on here to get a feel for what is involved. Given the shape of the hull, a combination of planklng most of the hull with solid balsa blocks at the bow and stern where there are tight curves might be the best option.

They are the james pottinger plans, I’m a bit disappointed with the level of detail, and no materials list like on the vic smeed drawings, do you think I might be better with the smeed drawing of his puffer? You are correct the line drawings are on there, what problems, do you think I may encounter,  if I do the plank on frame, and will there be much alterations yo the drawing if I do please?
