Thank you Bob, Dave and others. Wind burn? Now that's something I don't suffer from – sunburn, mosquito and sand fly bites? Possibly, but no wind burn. Mind you, we have to watch out for poisonous spiders and snakes, sharks, crocodiles and marine stingerssurprise. One thing I have found in my long life is that sharks etc can't get you if you stay on dry landlaugh, and there are no crocodiles within 600 km of where I live.

            Peter.

Over the past few weeks I've been gathering material for use in Range Finder .The weather most of the week had been mixed and I really needed to tie up the photo shoot as the Mersey has seen a reasonable amount of naval activity over the past week and one of the best ways for this was to take to the river on a Mersey Ferry. It was bitterly cold , hail and overcast , the prospect of disappointment was starting to set in . Then the Irish bound R-Ro had just departed Birkenhead and my luck changed , the sky cleared and the late afternoon light was perfect for those last few shots.

Hi Dave I was getting concerrned as my daily dose of photography was missing ,then I realised you are the same person who writes in the magazine. Be more patient my boy .

Nice composition in your latest pic and hope in the Rainbow for the future winkHappy New Year Michael

This is a novel picture Dave, but is slightly spoilt by having two points of interest?

That may sound a bit daft, but if you cloned out the Rainbow,….Would the picture have been improved?

                        What a delemma?

What do the readers think about fiddling pictures like this?…..Especially a Rainbow!

Hi Paul I suppose it's being in the wrong place at the right time . Actually the box brownie was pointed in a different direction , trying to get a different picture . I just glanced round.

Hi Mike thanks for the happy new year , I do hope so and of course like wise ,

Hello captain Bob The picture as you see it was pure chance, I was actually looking in a different direction , I turned round and there it was , can't miss a shot like that , can I . In fact I was looking towards where the GE was broken up . All pictures can be improved but are they better  for it  ?

On my walk on the 14th a general cargo vessel the 4783ton CSL Clyde entered the Mersey and today was moving out towards Eastham lock along the Manchester ship canal.   I just happened to be at the  Boat Museum Ellesmere Port a perfect location for some impromptu ship spotting .

At last a change in the weather , a perfect day bright and really clear. Although I do walk every day the last few months have been about as bad as it get for taking any pictures so today makes up for that.

First off I wanted to get a few shots of the Willem Van Oranje a 13917 ton trailing suction hopper dredger built at IHC Dredgers BV in 2010 and presently back filling the new 300m quay for the Seaforth Container port .

                              img_0026.jpg

                              img_0027.jpg

                              img_0028.jpg

The new quay is still being constructed and the huge pile driver has about 100m to go before all of the piles are fixed into place . In due course this section will be back filled . A very lengthy and noisy operation .

                              img_0029.jpg

More pictures of the usual river traffic latter .

Continuing with todays walk .Here is a regular to the Mersey the IOM ferry Ben -My-Chree on her regular turn around back to the IOM. Also I hoped I could get a few shots of the Willem Van Oranje out in the bay using its huge submersible dredging pump on the starboard side taking on more sand . It was quite a distance away before the starboard side was exposed but you can just make out the dredging pipe work being deployed then immersed into the water . Soon after the Ben was approaching the dredger and both came into the shot. Such distant shots would have be out of the question just a few days previous .

A superb day sun and clear blue sky with good visibility . Today was also the highest tide of the year at 10.2m or just over 30ft in old money . I was also interested on how the trailing suction dredger discharged is hoppers for back fill or more to the point how do they fix the main discharge pipe to the bow ?

first off two shots of the Willem nan Oranje leaving to replenish its hoppers.

On returning with its hoppers full of sand the job was to connect up the huge pump hose mounted on the bow ready to discharge the sand as back fill. This was done with the assistance of the small support tug Tessa F seen here .

Morning all today is dull and visibility is poor. Yesterday under much better conditions a smart looking hydrographic vessel called MV Line came into view . This is owned by CT Offshore a Danish company based at Klintebjerg in Denmark and specialising in ROV survey work for the off shore wind farm industry . Built at Damen ship yard in 2009 . This 108 ton 26m long vessel is powered by two Volvo Penta water jet drives with a forward thruster . In the second picture you can just make out the ROV mounted beneath the 10.3m extension crane aft . It could make an interesting model project.
