Hi Paul I most certainly agree and the liner Normandie also set a standard for style and elegance . It's a great pity that such a beautiful ship was destroyed by fire .

This U-tube colour pictorial of the great liner is well worth viewing

Hi Mattias good to hear from you and thanks for posting your picture of the QM at the Riverside Museum Glasgow. The original was built by John Brown and co Clydebank between January 1930 and entering service in 1936. As for who built the model , I'm not certain but I believe it was the ship yard model room and weighed in at  a   hefty 258kgs .

Taking pictures through the case is a real problem and get the angle wrong as I have done in these pictures and you get plenty of unwanted reflections . I've tried using a polarising filter but it hasn't made that much of a difference . I never use a flash as that just make a hard job even harder.

Theses two pictures of the QE and the QE2 taken at the Riverside Museum are the best I could do with the light conditions .

        thanks for taking interest

Abigail was on her way so I decided to meet up with her for my usual afternoon walk .

Coming down the buoy channel was B Gas Superior a coastal tanker in bound for Eastham lock . Followed by the sand dredger Ham .

          Abigail wanted to say hello

Hi Paul thanks for posting up your pictures , I must admit the first picture showing the maga wave is truly spectacular and a good many photographers would love to get such a shot . The last one must have been before the car park was extended?

Hi Mike and Mark thank you both for your kind comments .I have been taking pictures through out the year and as time and tide permits I'll certainly try to post up more of these snaps in time .

I have also missed your photos Dave, and it's good to see you back. I would think that it wouldn't have been a good time to go swimming, maybe a trifle too rough?laugh

Hello Peter thanks you for your kind words. Well time and tide waits for no man and I managed to get out for my afternoon walk but the Irish Sea and the Mersey continues to be worked up by the westerly winds and I'm told there is another storm ready to hit with the exotic name of Barney , what next I ask but Barney we are told has a kick with 80mph winds forecast . Still in slightly calmer seas there was plenty of early traffic which I missed but as is usual the river becomes busy around one hour before high tide. Entering into the river was the Chemical /oil tanker summer in bound for Langton lock Liverpool with a little bit of help from the tug Svitzer Stanlow and outbound was the HAM 316 hopper dredger continuing its long spell of work on the approaches to the river Mersey . As it was I even had a little help from the sun but I was also interested in the Caledonian Macbrayne ferry Lord of the Isles having recently been in Cammel Lairds .

I bet the crew on Lord of the Isles have an interesting trip back up the Irish Sea, the ship will be bobbing around like a cork.

I miss my winter sailings to and from the Isle of Man.

There is nothing better than battering across the Irish Sea in a force 8 on a cold and frosty morning.

Have a big fry up breakfast then find a good spot near a decent window to watch the natures show…….avoiding the toilets though as they are usually awash by the midway point.

                            Happy days

Paul , You must be having a laugh face 7 . I used to make the trip to John Lennon airport and pay the extra £ 70.00 rather than suffer on the King Orry .

                                Hi Dave

I normally flew from John Lennon with Emerald, I always had seat 4D (emergency exit over the stb wing) more leg room and first out if it ditched.

I went by ship when I knew the weather was going to be bad……….I always liked sailing in rough weather.

Keeping well enough, how are you getting on?

On our first visit to this region a couple of years ago we stayed in the then brand new Travel Lodge Hotel and had a marvellous view of the Mersey Estuary and over to the docks. We both commented on the amazing frequency of traffic on the river. And it didn't stop when all we could see were lights!

Thanks for filling in the names and destinations, Dave. Probably saw you and your dog on the beach by the Perch!

                                  Cheers,

With apologies to Dave for hijacking his thread but whilst the subject has turned to The Perch Rock I would like to recommend the Perch Chippy. One of the best purveyors of fish & chips that I have ever been in, and I've been in many such establishments.

If you ever visit New Brighton do yourself a favour and invest in a fish dinner…….you wont be sorry.

Not sure of it by name but we did go into the chippy opposite the Perch Rock and it was good. As is the caff in Victoria Road, next to the tattooist who is sadly no more.

Can't say I was impressed by the mdel boat club or its pond though!

Hi Martin Things have changes a wee bit around New Brighton as you have seen for yourself . Yet the new Model boat pond is the same size as the previous pond and only 10m distance from the old location . Like all venues for model boats there are good days and bad days perhaps as a reminder these few pictures will show what the pond at New Brighton is like during those pleasant summer days.

Between rain squalls I managed to get some walking in but not as I would have liked around high tide as this would have been as the light was fading. But I did notice that the relatively new Cal- Mac ferry Loch Seaforth was entering the Mersey 2 hours before high tide end-route to Cammel lairds. Launched at Flensburg Germany in July of 2013 the 7800 ton car ferry covers the Stornoway – Ullapool route. At 116m in length by 18.4m in beam the Loch Seaforth can carry 700 passengers and 143cars.

when I was there there was an old guy with a sailing model with no batteries(!) and a kid with a speedboat, just bought I should think. Both stayed 5 minutes and then it was empty!

But what a friendly place is the Wirrall, Liverpool and all round. I have never felt so welcome anywhere in England.

High tide today was well into the dusk but my late afternoon walk did offer the advantage of being able to get a better vantage point for at least one vessel the 15 year old 15317 ton container ship Rachel Borchard in bound to Seaforth container terminal . An hour later as the light was fading and from my own back yard I manage in clear conditions to get the Seatruck Progress entering the Mersey inbound to Langton lock .

                                                Hello Dave

Somehow I don't think the term 'back yard' applies to your palatial mansion on the banks of the river.

                                                Shouldn't it really read:

An hour later as the light was fading and from my upper garden terrace, luckily the Peacocks stayed out of shot, I manage in clear conditions to get the Seatruck Progress entering the Mersey inbound to Langton lock.

Nice picture of Seatruck……has anyone ever built a model?

Not the best of days for this afternoon walk but my focus of attention was the huge { for the Mersey} 153.617 deadweight crude oil Shuttle tanker Karen Knutsen built in South Korea in 1999 and in bound to Eastham oil terminal .

                                                    img_0478.jpg

Following on in really horrendous conditions was the Chemical products tanker Aragonith in bound for Ellesmere Port , a small vessel when compared to the Karen Knutsen .

Also waiting for tugs was HMS Sutherland a Type 23 frigate but before I could get any more shots the weather closed in with visibility cut and a follow on rain squall .For those interested in the grey line Range Finder will be covering at a future date a tour of HMS Sutherland .

Today on my walk the weather was cold but with perfect light conditions and for the second time this year the world largest Con-Ro vessel the brand new Atlantic star entered the river Mersey in bound from Hamburg and docking at Seaforth container terminal . The Atlantic star is 296m in length by 38m in beam and the official term for this 81600ton vessel is a Fully Cellular with Ro-Ro .
