Dear all, I have recently come across the sea queen boat my father built in 1973, unfortunately he died that Christmas and the boat was never really finished, he started to fit a merco engine and my mother brought him a remote control kit made by mc Gregor but this was never used and in fact is old and rusty, as I helped my dad when he started to build this boat I would love to finish it and put perhaps a electric engine in it as I believe most places don't like petrol engines, I have six grandchildren now and would love to get this in the water, I need some advice, I live in Hatfield Herts and wondered if there is anywhere in the district that may be able to give me some advice, or even if someone here may be able to help me, thanking you in advance

      Regards

      Keith.

Hatfield is quite an easy place to find boat sailing lakes. Ideally, you want to find where the local club sail, and when – there will probably be a club member on this forum who can help – and learn the ropes from them.

As for the boat, you will probably need a motor (probably an electric brushless) and a more modern Radio Control – the Chinese 2.4GHz sets are cheap and cheerful, but very good value at £20-£50.

We can advise on what to do with the boat, but we really need pictures of it from several angles to give a useful opinion. You can put them up on this forum – click on 'Albums' in the menu bar above…

By the way, both the Merco and the old McGregor radio set are probably worth a fair bit of money on EBay if you want to defray some of your expenses…

Thanks for your reply, I will get some pics and post them, I am at present looking for clubs in my area, maybe after I post the pics we can go from there.

            Cheers

              Hi Keith

              Welcome to the forum.

I love that you wish to finish the boat.

I am helping a mate finish his Aerokits Swordsman and Sea Hornet.

I am building a Sea Hornet from his original plans.

I hope you still have the original plans of the Sea Queen.

I get all my supplies from Hobbyking as are cheap and I have not had a problem with any of their gear.

But 90% of their boat equipment is from the International Warehouse.

If getting all new gear, I would go brushless motor with a couple of Lipo batteries.

These brushless motors are very powerful and would be equal in speed if not faster.

Another few forum sites you may wish to look at are RC Groups, RC Universe and Model Boat Mayhem(you tube has a few clips of Sea Queens).

Keith. A nice project. If you just wish to get the boat on the water with a reasonable turn of speed then I would agree that a brushless motor is the way to go (someone will have to advise on what model and Kv rating though).

I would not reccomend getting Lipo batteries unless you want to go really fast, as they do take a bit more care in the using and charging, and do not last as long at Nimh types, but it is up to you of course.

If you were to be making other fast models then this would be a different matter.

A Planet T5 2.4Gig radio set would be my choice for control. A big seller and perfectly adequate for what you need.

                Ashley

                  Hi Keith

I'd agree with Ashley regarding the batteries Nickel Metal Hydrides and not as potentially dangerous as Lithium Polymer cells.

My Grandson & I have just finished Sea Queen & Sea Commander from the new CNC kits available now and ran them together at Bluewater last weekend, I'm sure your grand children would find it fun.

Our models are at basic finish stage we are now thinking about crew members and fittings.
