…………….Of course, no one is compelled to follow it. If you are familiar with how full size vessels look when underway then it's not too difficult to make a MK1 eyeball judgement as to what is right. But a lot of modellers don't actually have that experience and it is all too common to see scale models ramapaging around a pond at distinctly unscale speeds. I think there is a You Tube video of a Flower class corvette virtually planing somewhere. Presumably its owner thought it looked just fine.

That might well be true but if it looks right to them………………..

They would probably think that what I think looks scale is very boring – which it probably is compared to the thrill of their speed. My idea of scale speed would probably put them off for life and destroy their enjoyment of their model!

You'll be telling me Thunderbirds wasn't real next!

Of course they were Richard, just like Bill & Ben the Flowerpot Men*. Doesn't everyone have to tie on their strings when they get up in the morning, surely it's not just me?

        * I could never quite understand their relationship with Little Weed…

Thunderbirds were real for me but Blue Peter spoilt it when they showed how to build Tracy Island from a cardboard box.

On the subject of scale speed – we Model Boaters are not the 'real fanatics' about getting the scale speed correct on our models. Have you ever been to a railway show when someone shouts that train isnt running at scale speed they are real fanatics about scale speed they put everyone to shame.

Not just scale speed John but scale acceleration and deceleration!

Thanks to everyone for all the effort that has gone into answering what I thought was a fairly simple question, it seems not and the responses have been very interesting. I shall have to think very carefully about my next question. I'm quite happy with a slow chugg around the water (local canal), I'll leave the speed to others neither of my models have planing hulls.

Interesting to see that when models of the new oiler for the QE carriers were tested, they were big…really big..8 feet or were they bigger than that?

Scale speed for models is a bit irrelevant when the water is not scale, and thus the huge models they test in their wave tanks.

The oiler I was on for the old carriers was 684ft long, but that was the real one, not the model!
