SAR&H harbour tugs

Does anybody know of scale models of any of the old SAR&H steam harbour tugs?

I’d like to build up a database of modellers who have made, are making, or possess models of any South African harbours (SAR&H) steam tugs.  I have a 1:32 scale C.F. Kayser, I know of a similar model in Port Elizabeth which is probably the CFK, and another also in Port Elizabeth of the T. Eriksen which is of a slightly smaller scale.   I’ve heard stories of others, such as the J.R. Moore but cannot find details of builder or scale.  Please, if anyone can add to the database I’d be most grateful.  Thank you, Rob

Sorry I picked up this post late – I’m a member of the Western Cape Model Boat Club and we have a couple of old SARH tugs in the club. Sorry I can’t remember which, they don’t often appear due to size and weight. One of them belongs to our treasurer Pat Levers and I’m sure he could give you more info- [email protected]

 

Just as a matter of interest I have a modern Portnet tug, Voith-Schneider propelled – guess that’s too modern for you?

I started my time in the SARH on the Danie Hugo,RB Waterston, RH Watermeyer and others.  They were all pigs – we were all glad to have them finally retired!!

What a great pity to see J.R. More deteriorating.

J.R. More is the very last of the big Steam Tugs left.

In contrast:-

The restoration of CHALLENGE the last steam Tug on the Thames.

Challenge is awarded over £900,000 to help restore the very last of the Thames Steam Tugs.

A new boiler will be installed, the steam plant will be restored and the electronic navigation equipment will get an update. "Without the invaluable assistance of the HLF it was likely that, despite the heroic efforts of our volunteers, Challenge would have continued to deteriorate to a point where further restoration would have been impossible"

It is hoped the tug will be restored in time for the 75th anniversary of Operation Dynamo in 2015.

Further to my post on the 29 April 2012.

I have heard from a member of the Durban Model Boat club and he has given me some good news with regard to J. R. More and the Durban Maritime Museum in general.

Quote "The good news is that a move to form a "Friends of the Museum "group who
would take on much of the work is rapidly gaining momentum and we are
confident of getting sponsorship from the business sector, a meeting to
clarify the terms of reference etc will be held in the next week or so." Unquote
