Can anyone give me any advice regarding the acceptability of Saito boilers with regard to current regulations??

As we have already said you need to seek out a qualified model steam engineer who can inspect the boiler and either pass or fail it.

I wish I coild Paul. Unfortunately I am disabled and live 20 mile from the nearest town.

Makes some things difficult but has it's advantages too.

            No traffic problems here.!

I was advised to post in the STEAM pages as I might get a better response. But time will tell.

It's not really a question of whether a particular type of boiler is acceptable but more a question of whether the particular unit you have is acceptable and safeat this point in time. If it is several years old it could be suffering from internal corrosion for example. Have a read of Richard Simpson's recent article on the subject here: **LINK**

I am also disabled and whilst I can still drive I wouldn't travel more than 20 miles so I would find an engineer and post the boiler to him.

If you thought you'd walked into a minefield with Richard Simpon's article then the bad news is that the article is out of date as the code has been revised and made tougher! The following dicussion on the Model Engineer website might give you an idea of what is happening LINK.

The other thing is that if the boiler is made from brass or has brass fittings then it will be regarded even more severly due to problems of de-zincification.

If you want to steam the boiler in private then you don't need to bother with the regs etc. but for your own safety get a pressure and steam check done. If you want to use the boiler in a "public" environment then you will need to make sure that you arecovered by insurance – either your own or through a club and the boiler will need to comply with the necessary regs. otherwise the insurance would be void.

It really does look at the moment that the way things are going live steam powered models are really not worth the hassle that goes with them. Unfortunately the very people that should be standing up for modellers seem to be just going along with what are becoming ever more stringent requirements, with it has to be said no real case being made for the tightening of the regs.

Exactly the same process happened when everyone jumped on the 'ban the petrol engine' bandwagon when the very people who should have been standing up for modellers went along with the dash for electric.

I agree with your statement about brass boilers having age related problems and personally I am surprised that they are still allowed to be used in public spaces. I know that Saito boilers are well made but in the hands of a novice, who is unaware that the normal pressure range during running is between 30-45 psi, there is the potential for the boiler to be pressurised beyond 60 psi especially in a large model.

Copper is a far better material for boiler construction.

Well, it was just a thought.

I won't bother with Saito then.
