      greetings all

I have nearly completed building a Midwest Seguin tug boat but I have a problem, having fitted a rudder servo to the allocated slot shown on the instructions and plan I can no longer get the rear deck which is removable to give access to the rudder to lay flush with the main deck, it is slightly standing proud, if any other member of this forum has built a Seguin tug did they have the same problem, or is there a special servo for this boat, any suggestions would be most welcome.

      Yours in anticipation

      Bryan

A few photos of the area might help us suggest something. For example, I have a Hitec unit which is intended as an aileron servo for model aircraft and is much shallower than a standard 20x40x40 servo. It might suit your installation. **LINK**

At times like this it is usual to say "bother", or even "botheration" and ponder the good sense of whoever drew it.

It might have been designed with a servo that sat slightly lower than the one that you have, not all servos are the same height above the mounting lugs, even if all the other dimensions are the same. There are lower proflie servos, but usually it is the lower box that is shallower. Resiting the servo might be the answer, but pictures of the problem will help no end.

Several of my models have servos well away from the stern and a long run of aircraft style line-in-a-tube to connect them. Works for aircraft, works well for boats in putting the servo in an accessible position.

Also I like to use the nylon tillers which can be fitted by feel, and if fitted with a small nyloc nut can be set to grip the rudder post firmly but at the same time not so tight that adjustments can not be made simply by tweaking the rudder.

A thought that passed – is the servo mounted using the fittings usually supplied? Since they only serve to protect the servo against vibration in a model plane, they are not needed on a boet. Just use either a larger srew or a big washer. That should reduce the needed headroom a bit.

How does the linkage terminate on the servo horn? A "proper" swivel clamp uses a lot of headroom, a simple "Z" bend through the servo hrn works well, and minimises the height.

I've never had a Seaguin, but I have seen them referred to many times over the years, but never with this problem. From that, I suspect that the problem is more related to the servo and/or its linkage than the basic design of the boat.

                  Greetings Dave, Malcolm and Ashley

Thank you for all your sugestions, the problem was the top of the servo was too high, the solution was to either purchase a servo with a lower profile or lower the servo, the servo was situated in a tight fitting hole in the sub deck ,moving the servo was not possible, however my brain engaged and the problem was solved by cutting off the securing lugs and pushing the servo down a fraction of an inch and glueing two wooden shoulders to the side of the servo to stop it falling through the hole ,job done.

My only excuse for not thinking of this first is that I am getting very old

                  Once again many thanks Bryan
