Would my boat run alright if I fitted a rear mounted rudder with built in water pickup instead of the original rudder 2 inches in front of the transom.I will use which ever one is better

"Better" is a subjective term at best, and in this case would depend on the particular combination of motor, prop, hull, battery voltage and weather/water conditions as well as the type and shape of the rudder, amount of movement etc etc. There is really only one way to find out. My advice would be to follow the original design – especially if you're not sure.

Wayne. Where is the water pickup at the moment?? If directly behind the prop, then moving t several inches further rearward (the rudder/pickup) may result in less water pressure and so less cooling water flow, or do you plan on moving the prop as well?

OR do you not have anything in place yet.

If you were concened with the steering only, as DM says…only one way to find out….

I'm guessing, in the absence of any firm data, but

1 – rudders with built-in waterscoops are often used for high-speed racing boats.

2 – if you have a high-speed racing boat, then rudder positioning is often critical. But racing boats usually have rudders placed well behind the transom…

3 – if you don't have a fast racing boat, then a rudder-mounted scoop is unlikely to provide much water, as Ashley points out above…

Thanks all you helped me see that the best is to follow the original method as on the plan. Thanks again for your advice

On the other hand, two of my boats, one a made-up one, and one a non-original setup conversion have rudders mounter to one side and in front of the prop and they work ok….

picture shows Km model, upside down of course.
