I think it depends upon what kind of rudder and what kind of shaft and what happened to part them….

Some more details would be useful.

John. Welcome to the forum. As Colin says, more info needed,

BUT usually rudders and shafts are made from brass, and the rudder flat will either be soldered on or riveted.

If it is not brass then we would need a picture to see what style you have. A measurement of the shaft would be useful as well.

Usually a shop-bought plastic rudder comes with the shaft attached, so rudder and shaft are one unit. Having said that, I have known the rudder shaft weld itself to the rudder shaft tube, and both pull out as a unit. That, after some filing, bending and cursing resulted in buying some new brass tube to replace the old curly one.

I make my own nowadays. The small bandsaw slots 5mm brass rod very easily, brass sheet cut to size for the blade, soldered on, brass tube as a sliding fit for the rudder post, nylon clamp-on tiller. Easy.

                    Hi all,

Like Dave and Ashley, I make most of my rudders in the same way. I also make a pattern in wood for a silicone two part mould and after filing two flats on brass rod insert it in the mould before pouring. This is mainly for the smaller sizes and specials.

I use wheel collets, usually brass or plated and solder them to a brass tiller arm with the grub screw pointing forward so you can tighten it up easily.. I don't like the clamp on bought tiller arms very much as they mainly need a nut and bolt done up from the side which can be really tricky in small spaces.

                    Cheers..Ron

Ron. The access issue is exactly why I LIKE the nylon tillers. Fitted with a nyloc nut, they can be fitted "blind", and can be adjusted so that you have sufficient grip on the rudder shaft, but can alter the rudder angle by simply holding the rudder servo link and tweaking the blade.

I have never had a rudder fall off yet!!!….

Ah!! Ashley, that is sneaky….It was the black nylon Radio Active tiller and yes, you could tweak them a bit, and I never had one fall off either, I just don't like them much.
