      Colin.
May I be the first of probably a number to say, that the moderation to such a level of the topic “Spell checker” was, to use a much used adage,…….”using a sledge hammer to crack a nut”
Bob Abel threw out an olive branch to Arnies in the hope that “we could start again”.
Sadly Arnie s chose to slap him in the face and throw it back at him and us all with his reply.
He seams not to want to “fit in” to a merry band, and is a tad over sensitive as to what has happened.
I have no problem at all in watching my “P’s and Q’s” but I defend my right to have my say in a normal and none defametory way ( and that is why I deleted my earlier post this afternoon) in such a democracy.
However, if we are to be sensored as to what we say, within reason when someone takes umbridge at a minor problem, then we have no more a democracy, but an autocacy.
If Arnie does have problems with our british humour then I feel sorry for him and perhaps the model boat forum ISN’T the place for him..

Yes if you were to discourage the humour in this forum it would be a sad thing. To my way of thinking, a thread without humour in it is like a machine without oil. It wont go for long.

Humour is a fact of life , you only have to listen to our Government to see it in action every day.  (am I allowed to use emicons sorry if it offends anyone)
In the related Post, Colin had actually answered the question in the first reply afterwards , subsequent posts which were humorous also led to alternative methods of spell checking , although the easiest I find is just to type it in a blank email , spell check and then copy and paste.

The thread may have gone like this without the humour.

            a. Is there a spell checker on this forum

            b. NO

I am not discouraging free expression or humour which is why I locked the topic rather than deleting it. But the discussion was going nowhere with tit for tat posts which were becoming tedious and unproductive. This Forum is supposed to be about model boating rather than whether somebody possesses a sense of humour or not. which is a matter of opinion rather than fact

My personal view is that posters on both sides are being a bit oversensitive and should try and see the other person’s viewpoint even if they do not agree with it.

My fairly extensive experience of posting and moderating on other forums has demonstrated to me the hard way that what you intended in levity can frequently be taken the wrong way and that you do need to try and put yourself in the shoes of the other party.

On forums like these you will get members from all backgrounds and walks of life and different personalities. All have valid contributions to make and we all need to rub along together.

                Dear All

Like every other walk of life we must have rules that govern conduct on the site and it falls to Colin to be the umpire in our little world.

Despite our personal views we have to accept that it is Colin’s job to keep the site even keel and that job includes making sure that the content is fair and unbiased.

Dissention with our moderator at this delicate point in the forums life can only be counter productive and therefore we must support his decisions.

Besides I have been considering the comments regarding a “clique” and can understand the thinking behind the words.

As we know there are a few members who make the most of the contributions to the forum and perhaps this could be construed as a “club within a club”.

Does this deter other members from posting comments?

I totally agree with your comments regarding the fact that we shoul support Colin and his efforts to moderate our sometimes outspoken comments.

But I dont agree with your worry about a “club within a club” for without members like yourself, Bob and Ashley there would not be a site and I enjoy the harmless banter between you all.

Hi Paul. I too don’t think you need to worry about a “club within a club”. In the past it was you chaps that kept the forum going when it was struggling and are to be thanked for that. It is a fact of life in any group of people or club that it is only a small percentage of people that put in most of the effort and without those sort of people the group would founder.
Personally I think that the forum has become much more alive.  We have a wider range of personalities, more people posting, some very helpful ideas and technical info coming through and a bit of banter which helps me to get a bit of a feel for the personalities of the people posting.
I agree we must support Colin, he is doing a difficult job very well.

                    David.

I agree that you will always get a core of members who keep everything afloat and act as the “mainspring” of a Forum such as this. As David says. the more the merrier. There is nothing to worry about as long as the core grows in a healthy inclusive way, embracing all those who are willing to put the effort in to make it all work. And friendly banter does help oil the works!
