Revell Titanic

G’morning chaps,

I wonder if anyone has converted the Revell Titanic to r/c operation?

I’m building the 1/400th scale version with twin 280 motors, independently controlled by two Action Pico esc’s for propulsion and steering(thanks Dave!)a 4.8v 3700a/h battery pack,a small Mp3 player which will be playing music of the era and if there’s room inside, I’ll be fitting working internal illumination.

I’d appreciate any pics of the internals if anyone has built something similar…

Yes it has been done although probably not by any of the regulars on this site. However you could have a look here: http://www.titanicmodel.com/ where there is a wealth of information.

Don’t forget to put up a gallery of your build here as you go. I have a Revell Queen Mary 2 sitting in the workshop waiting for me to get around to it.

I guessed as much, the Revell Titanic is a bit small for a full r/c conversion, but that’s part of the challenge!

Well chaps, both esc’s are hooked up and operational and Titanic has just had her maiden voyage in the domestic test tank. 

I’m pleased to say that all went well, no leaks anywhere, but she did suffer from slipping of the motor to propshaft couplings, nothing that a quick application of heat shrink tube to the inboard end of the propshaft won’t cure(I use silicone tube for couplings in plastic kit coversions, so I guess that the tube is a touch oversize to clamp firmly over the motor shafts).

Apart from that minor hiccup, I’m pleased with progress so far…I’ll post up some pics in the morning when I’ve cured the slippage problems. 

I’m surprised at how high in the water she rides though, with all the electrics aboard her, a 4.8volt battery pack, a 6volt gel cell for the lights and I still had to add two pairs of wire cutters to bring her down to the water line.

Purely temporary ballast, me old chap…just gave me a rough idea of how much lead shot to go buy. Been in the bath(sorry, the internally fitted domestic test tank) again this morning, the slippage problems on the shaft/motor couplings are now cured, she’s quite sprightly, which surprised me.

(eh…there’s no signs of Wullie following over here, is  there????)

Chuck some ice cubes in the tub with it and you have the whole scenario. Better still, down here there’s an unlimited supply of ice about for an outside scenario…..

You may mock chap…but a good few years ago I started on a big Titanic. The idea was to hit a iceberg(radio controlled, in case my aim was a bit off)to then sink the boat and raise it afterwards.

I hit problems with the boat, it turned out to be a bit on the big side…like 14′ 4″ big!

Then I started hunting out information on how to get it to sink and how to raise it again…someone put me in touch with a certain Bernie Wood of the AMS, I contacted Bernie, and he suggested I build a sub first to see how things would work.

I did just that…and  the rest is history. Like a Darnell Type V11c, a Darnell P class(converted into HMCS Onondaga),a Darnell X craft, the Engel Patrick Henry, a Revell Gato, a scratch built 9′ Type 1Xc minelayer, three DSRV’s, a Trumpeter Sea Wolf, a Trumpeter Kilo, another Darnell Type V11c(converted into U-441, the U-Flak 1)assorted odd U-boats from plans and hulls…I still have the r/c iceberg though!!!

Oh,,,then there was a Robbe SeaWolf (converted into a Russian Cold War project boat named ‘Mother Russia’), a Steve Neill USS Blueback, a Japanese ‘Kaiten’ midget sub(still in it’s box on top of the wardrobe)and a Revell Type V11c/41 Atlantic version.

Then there’s the surface boats…

 Now  that’s a possibility Andy….maybe sink the iceberg and leave the Titanic unscathed?
