I have a little project on the go.

Could someone help me with a scale calculation

280m at 1/72 scale =

Sorry to ask but I have been crunching numbers all day and my brain has turned to mush and I need to check my calculations.

No catch I just needed someone to confirm my work, at the moment I wouldn't trust myself to count my eleven fingers without making a mistake.

I had a similar problem recently while trying to rescale a large drawing. My figures for going from 15ft to I inch to 20 ft to I inch ended up with a model length longer than the original! Got there in the end though.

Please don't apologise as I haven't really made it clear that the QE is my next drawing project, Currently I am researching the ship, thanks to Dave Wooley for the photos, and proposing to draw it at 1:72 scale which will allow the purchase of scale aircraft and helicopter kits.

The ship is 250m long which will result in a model 3.8m (12ft) long, the model will be designed in sections for ease of storage and transport.

Yes A4… or A3…. or A0

That's the great thing about digital drawings… they can be printed on any size of paper and still be 100% accurate.

I have reached my first stumbling block as I cant find any cross sections across the width of the hull.

I don't think its classified as the individual blocks were all open to view when they were being transported for assembly.

I have started making educated guesses and extracting as much info as I can from images on the internet but getting it right at this stage will save me a heap of trouble further down the line.

Dave has already been a great help and sent me a pile of high quality photos.

Airfix had made a one off model but I don't think any models are available commercially.

Might a scale of 1:144 not be a better plan?

That makes for a much more transportable hull, and 1:144 is still a pretty common plastic aircraft scale.

It was always going to be either 1:72 or 1:44 scale for deck space as I intend to fly scale helicopters off it and hopefully F35s if I can get one that does a vertical take off.

Transport isn't a problem as I can either take it apart for transporting inside the car or simply use a dinghy trailer and tow it to the lake.

Ok, well good luck on building this monster then.

For inspiration you could look up the 1:96 build of Emma Maersk on the dutch Modelbouwforum (www.modelbouwforum.nl); this is a 4,3m long monster.

I will follow your build log with anticipation, such big vessels are off limits for me but oh so interesting and impressive! Good luck!

By designing your model on CAD, Paul, you can always change the final size quite easily at a later date

But we do like big uns!

If you get there on the right day, you can see a giant carrier on Llandudno boating lake

I don't want to dampen your enthusiasm but changing drawing sizes isn't as easy as simply clicking a switch. On something with the size and complexity of the QE it would take 2 to 3 days to make and check all of the changes.

With AutoCAD…….Layouts can be any size…..Complete with correct dimensions too

Turbo Cad has the same capabilities as AutoCAD the problems arise when the design includes readily available materials.

For example think about 6mm x 6mm stringers in a 4ft design.

If you wanted to reduce the design to 3ft the size of the stringers would change to 4.8mm x 4.8mm.

4.8mm x 4.8mm isn't a commercially available size so the stringers on the 3ft design would have to be changed to 4mm x 4mm.

Now consider all of the other drawing dimensions that will have to be changed to suit commercially available materials.

The upshot of all this is that changing sizes isn't as simple as flipping a switch.
