Reports today are suggesting that the QE2 has been sold for scrap to Chinese shipbreakers

      One report here: **LINK**

It was a shame when the QE2 reached the end of its service life and the idea to make it into a hotel in the warm & dry atmosphere of Dubai would have preserved the ship for a few more years. But now, like a lot of other things, it looks as though it has fallen victim to the current recession.

Perhaps this is a better end for a machine that was designed to be a greyhound of the oceans as it wont suffer the ignobility of being encased in concrete and being turned into some kind of fairground attraction.

Hi Colin yes the reports indicate that a Chinese crew are on the ship. It’s a great pity that such an iconic liner has to go to the breakers for scrap. This is in sharp contrast to our Dutch friends that managed to save the SS Rotterdam from a similar fate which is now a floating hotel, exhibition and conference centre plus a preserved historical vessel. It seems to be reasonably successful and I certainly enjoyed my visit. For the Netherlands the Rotterdam being moored close to the iconic Holland-Amerika line terminal is as good as it gets

              .

Paul has it to rights. Many a noble machine has been "encased in concrete" and fairgroundised.

I would scrap the Victory on these grounds too

                and the Belfast

Apparently Cunard have now put out the following statement:

We have noted the messages of understandable concern with regards to the recent article in the Daily Mail with reference to QE2. We remain in close contact with Dubai and can reassure you that to the very best of our knowledge this story is pure speculation – one of a number of stories and rumours as we have seen over recent months. Our best advice would be to ignore the story.

                      Best regards,
                      Cunard Line.

However, I don't think it was just the Daily Mail running the story.

                      Colin
