Will you give us a quick run through regarding your forthcoming D-Day Extravaganza, please, I seem to have been asleep somewhere along the line…..It sounds interesting!

Bob, this was just an idea, something to commemerate D-day with, at our pond. It was suggested (cant remember by who) that we could make a whole batch of landing craft and make a channel crossing in formation and effect a "landing" at the pond. Nothing has been set in stone yet, just an idea, but could be fun. I will do a seperate post later on to see if we can get some more activities going elsewhere by other groups/clubs. Might make it in the mag?? good model boating publicity,

I will be building a "no-frills" landing craft as a starter for anyone wanting to build (more or less same as per my album photo), and issuing a plan. This is purely to give an idea about what will work, and will be easy and cheap to make and is not meant to be a replica LCM but a base starter. As others make various items, and have been proven to work we might draw these up as well. Trevor is making an infantry landing craft, which will be a bit smaller. All craft for our event will have to be approx 1/32 or 1/35 scale in order to be a bit uniform in size or it will look silly, and so can fit commercially available soldiers and tanks in or on.

Other than that I dont know.. we can do a bit of landing craft racing, tug-o-war, slalom and towing comps I suppose, and have a side display of WW2 vessels, but other than that we will be open for EASY ideas. Nothing that will need masses of organising. We are NOT a club at Bushy park.

            Ideas to "todays boating".

The front and rear screens are finished and the inner formers have been modified by removing the central areas of the walls

              forward formers.jpg

The next job is to remove the cabin structure and mask off the coaming prior to reassembly and final glueing!……Wow!

Red Leader recommends we glue reinforcement stringers to the cabin sides

The drawings have finally been amended, incorporating the choice of 1.5 ply for the superstructure

                stringers required.jpg

Note the top stringer is applied full length, which will come in handy, when the roofs are being fitted

I`m amazed to discover, that the view count from last Monday is 1263!

                  Good morning Bob,

have you fitted shaft and motor yet..?…

you get a clash of bulkheads with motors and battery packs,

i may missed that bit ,

as for cabins there is a lot of glazing , a nice liitle problem,

as for my slant on cabins i would have fixed sides to comeing.

and have a removable roof sections, and have cabin fit out , gin palace style,.

that of course you have fitted runing gear,…………..cheers good build any way Larry…..

                    Hello Larry

Not got the prop shaft stuff yet………..There's no rush anyway

All the local model shops closed down a few years ago

Our local shop is now 36 miles away!

                      Keep up the good work.

                        Bob,

Which is the model shop at 36miles? we have one in Whitefield (mostly railways), a new shop on the Whitefield side of Bury (deals with RTR aircraft, helicopters, cars a few RTR boats) and fortunately one in Bolton, the Hobby and Model Centre. Model Zone in Manchester has probably closed its doors for the last time now.

                        Tony.

                          Hello Tony

The model shop at 36 miles is Steve Webb's place in Frodsham, not far from Chester

A super duper shop!…………..It's a real Aladdins cave for modellers!

The next model shop is at Greenfield near Talacre…..about 60 miles from Stockport

The shop in Deansgate, Manchester has just closed down!

                            Hello Bob

The problem with Steves shop has always been parking, the nearby little shopping centre is always busy as is the road outside the shop. When there is a space I usually end up parking on the sloping road opposite the shop but as that road is residential the parking can be hit and miss.

                              But what a shop!

                                  Hi Boyz!

Finally glued up the cabin structure!…….Wow!….What a milestone of a love/hate relationship!

Nice to build, but you need to be alert to the smooth shape of the structure!……ie…..No lumps and bumps are allowed!

My advice to the Newbies……..Take your time and work accurately

What a great looking model? Congrats Paul

Now for a good clean up and glue fillets need to be added inside

Be careful when glueing the formers……..Don`t want any glue near the coaming or you`ve just built yourself a static model!

Now then, Red Leader……..Does the roof edge overlap the cabin walls?

If not, then we could use 1mm ply for the roof material and will be easier to shape?

Just tried 1.5mm ply on the roof and it didn`t like the two way stretch! Only hope the Turkish bath can save the day?

Can you give us a quick verbal report on your Sea Spray build, please?

Was highly surprised that the cabin just lifted off the hull without too much trouble……

                                        Hello Bob

The cabin roof finishes flush with the cabin walls so you could use a thinner ply or even balsa if you wished. For a decorative effect I added a gutter strip to the cabin walls.

Re: the ease of lifting off the cabin.

The cabin is designed to fit snugly without being overtight this should provide an adequate level of waterproofing without having to mechanically fix the cabin to the hull.

Making a start on the roofing

Tried 1mm ply, but this was far too thin and wouldn`t flex uniformily

1.5mm is perfect for the job and flexed just right

Some of the formers needed filling as can be seen in the foreground

Card for the roof?? As an alternative, Some nice quality stuff from an art shop. A coat of eze-cote and glass mat would strengthen it up no end! or simply tissue and dope.
