Progress!“>☹️ Recently heard they are stopping support for Windows seven early next year. Not wanting to risk updating my perfectly good PC to Windows 10 (after hearing all the horror stories of lost files), I have just got a new (2nd hand) PC with Windows 10 in it for just over £100. Have been copying files over into it. But as I thought, some of my old software will not work in 10, so they expect me to purchase more – No chance! “>😆 Tomorrow, I will be putting the new one in service, and putting the old one elsewhere for use as a "storage hulk" that will never be connected to the internet. It still has 456Gb storage space left in it, so I will be able to continue to use it for special things such as photo editing/writing etc, and copying files to it from the replacement PC every month for safe storage. It seems to me that progress in electronics (and probably everything else) is to "improve" things by making them more user-unfriendly, and each new piece of equipment must be slightly (if not greatly) harder to use than that which it replaced!“>😯 And above all, make sure that it cannot be repaired easily, and virtually impossible to physically open without specialist knowledge!“>😕 Whilst not forgetting that it should be absolutely essential that it becomes obsolete within a few months and breaks down within a week of the guarantee expiring!“>😕.

Don't panic Bob, Windows 10 is fine, I'm using it on a 10 year old pc right now and all the software that was on it at the beginning is still working.

The only frustration I've had is that the latest version of Cura refuses to run due to the graphic driver no longer supported. Doesn't really matter, just changed to Slic3r instead.

It isn't fine for me! I had difficulty getting Microsoft Word 2000 to run on it, but I eventually managed it! I need that for certain things such as the adjustable grid in the drawing section that is no good on Apache Open Office. Also, my Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 will not install. Looking at newer versions, it seems to be a never ending payment every year to keep it, and I do not want to "rent" software! Lots of other functions are more difficult, although I will no doubt get used to them. But they will, by that time, have decided to change it again!

I have just changed to Win10 as we have changed our CPU. I have a similar problem to yours my copy of Word 2000 will not load and for the amount of use I need its not worth buying another copy. I think now you only get a year's worth at a time. You will have to let me know how you got it to work.

Our other problem is that it seems to push the screen display off the LH edge of the monitor screen. Couldn't originally see the power options. I have had to move the task bar from the bottom to the RH edge, we can now see the power options but still lose the LH edge.

                Tim,

When you install Windows 2000, when it gets to the part where it says there is a problem, press the "Ignore" button. The installation will then move on a bit and then stop with the error.    Keep repeating pressing the error button until it finally gets to the end and says Finished. Then it should be OK

I have been battling all morning trying to set up this new PC in my main working space, and only just got onto the internet again, but there is no curser anymore, at the moment. My original mouse would not work either.

Still investgating, but it really is a pain in the neck.

You should be able to reduce the % size of the descktop that will give you the edges again, but I haven't got that far yet.

I will give that a try.

I have tried reducing the screen size but it moves to the left and gives a black band on the right.

                  Thanks for the tip.

I have been struggling with Windows 10 for about 7 hours today. Very hard going, and nowhere near good as Windows 7. I have at last managed to get most of the things I want in it, and installed the printers etc. A real pain!

Umm word 2000, currently Year 2019, not surprised really that some things do not work to be honest I always thought Word 2000 was not that great, , I have always managed to find a work around and although on W10 Pro I am still using my Software package from 2010, not sure how long it will stay working. Despite the initial " Oh my God the world will end when W10 was introduced it hasn't and I find it just as good if not better than XP , W& or W8.1, less said about W8 the better.

I realise that some do not like and have problems with W10 but my experience on the whole has been great..

I spent about ten hours today trying to sort it out, and I think it is dreadful. It keeps stopping for its security updates, it forgets things, the icons will not stay where I put them on the desktop. I still do not know how to get a website address from a site (I just used to right click to find it). It is extremely erratic and slow. It takes the computer about fifteen minutes to come on because it is "keeping you safe online" I really need the Word 2000 for the grid drawing programme that I cannot find elsewhere, but at least that works. I still can't find how to put e-mail Icons on the desktop. I managed it earlier, but they have since disappeared – Really fed up with the whole show. This is why I threw up a good job in electronic communications on board a brand new passenger liner in late 1992. It was like this every day, event to the extent of stopping the main engines practically every evening on the first few voyages – all the VDU screens on the bridge, radio office and engine-room showing nothing more than flickering alphabet soup mixed in with screaming alarms –

                        Going to bed nowsmiley

All very strange, only takes my PC les than a minute, was slightly longer but changed to a SSD drive, Icons stay where I put them and copying websites is right click as normal, not sure about keeping you safe online but have not come across that so assume it must just be an option at start off which you should be able to turn off on the settings or system settings menu.

Just done a bit of googling and it looks like it may be linked to the inhouse virus protection system " Windows Defender " as I use Norton I assume the defender is not on my system or is running on a low rating.

Picture shows my screen, and as you can see the web URL is clearly visible, along with all the Favourites on the tool bar.

Luck of the draw I think. Our pc is over 10 years old but converted to W10 with no hassle. The only thing that won’t work is the disc drive, and there is no driver for it on W10 for my pc.

Could get an external disc drive, but rerelease needed and the mrs’s laptop drive works ok if read.

Not that I am an expert but as suggested it may be your virus protection is the issue. I seem to remember changing ours a short while after conversion.

It came on a lot quicker this morning and is behaving better. But I am completly incapable of minimising windows, If I right clik, nothing happens. Windows 10 reminds me of politicians who keep saying "It is perfectly clear" or "I want to make it perfectly clear" when it is anything but

Also recalls my final seafaring days where some new piece of electronic "junk" was put aboard each voyage with the suppliesr saying it was very simple to use. At the end of the voyage, after having failed completely to use it, they come aboard, look at me sympathetically and proceed to show me how. Two hours later, having failed themselves – the standard reply "We have installed this on dozens of ships and have never had any problems before!" laugh Still can't find the curser here on MB – No wonder they call it a "curser!" no
