Having got fed up of building ship models, I have just completed a Pot Belly Stove (Circa 1898). Two feet to one inch scale. Mainly wood with brass feet, brass door and brass chimney. It has a flickering red LED inside, connected via the front feet.

      Looks very good!

          Hello Bob,

That stove does indeed look very good! I really like the surface, and the way you've made it look like cast iron — it has just the right amount of unevenness. And I love the fairly light but just-so touch of weathering!

Now you just need to build a suitable boat to go around it …

            Thanks,

The body was turned from an old wooden broom handle. The rim round the middle is a disk of 1/32nd marine plywood glued between top and bottom halves. The ash can is splayed beading, whilst the door and feet are brass. The chimney is also brass. Sprayed first with red oxide primer, then satin black. The LED is a cheap flickering type requiring 3 Volts and only takes about 12mA. The LED is covered with a piece of kitchen roll soaked in red printer ink.

Hi Bob I took my notebook to my friend to show him what you have made .He is astounded as he has just built one from a old gas bottle ,I left him hanging for a while then I told him yours is in miniature

I had to hotfoot it out of his way ,he calmed down and said you have a hidden talent Now he is a believer of model boats not toy boatscheekyMichael

Thanks for replies. The stove is very large scale for me, and didn't take long to make. It made a change from ships and looks really "hot" when you see the flickering red coals!

I thought I might make an Alaskan log cabin, 1898 era (Goldrush). Contents, pot belly stove, bearskin rug, table, chairs, bunks, axe, Winchester rifle, LED oil lamp etc. with back end open. Front half covered in snow and ice. It really depends on whether I can make the contents to my satisfaction. Stove came out OK. Next item, 2 inch long Winchester rifle.

I have now made the Winchester rifle to the same scale. It all looks very rough as it is enlarged here, but in real life, it looks OK

                          Thanks Dave,

I don't suppose the move will be permanent, but a change is as good as a rest!smiley

Whilst waiting for the paint to dry on the rifle, I made a woodsman's axed this afternoon. The rest should be easy – tables, chairs, bunks and my wife is figuring out how to make the bearskin rug. Maybe a kettle for the stove, a couple of bottles for the table. Would like a cartwheel leaning on the outside as well, that should be a bit of a challenge. The snow and ice is no problem as I have done maritime Arctic dioramas.

I have always been interested in Alaska and the gold rush days, as in The Trail of '98!

One of the buzz phrases in the technical world is 'Nano Engineering'. I think the modelling world has just caught up! Brilliant work but annoying as I'm going to have to upgrade mi specs to see it!

I have now progressed with the cabin. It has been more tedious than I thought. The logs are dowels and the rough bark is added to each by gluing silver crepe paper round them (silver to the outside). Each log has to be notched at the ends to engage with the lower and upper ones. After it is complete, it will be painted with acrylic Burnt Umber (Dark brown), then wiped slightly so bits of the silver show through. Tests have shown that this makes a very realistic looking rough log. The floor will be planked, and the inside of the cabin fitted with more rough furniture. I have made the tiny oil lamp for a table and it is lit with a small yellow light emitting diode inside it. The back of the cabin is absent. Viewed from the front, there will be a lot of drifted snow. Looking in the back, it should show a cosy interior lit with the yellow oil lamp and flickering pot belly stove. Note the winchest rifle and the axe propped against the door frame. This afternoon, I have completed most of the front and one side. The bare dowels in the photograph have not yet had their "bark" glued on. It has been a welcome change from ships.

It was very tedious notching all the logs and putting the "bark" on, but at last, the walls are complete. Next task: floor, door and roof. Wonderful change from ship models!smiley

I can really understand what you mean by"tedious", but the bark effect is truly great! It absolutely looks the thing!

Have been making the roof beams this afternoon. Next, will be the floor and door.

                                      Really enjoying it.

The cabin is well-advanced now, but appears to be as much of a "damp squib" as models of merchant ships! Nevertheless, I am enjoying the build very much. Here is the first trial with the lighting switched on.
