            Hello Luke

There are lots of designs on http://www.the-blueprints.com/  they are only outlines and not true plans but will give you a taste of different types of craft.
If you know what type of boat do you want to build then let us know as one of our membership might just have a plan that you could borrow.

We will be able to help with material and tool choices once we know which model you wish to build.

Our membership covers a wide base in model types from warships and lifeboats to tugs and speedboats, we even have paddle steamers and yachts……..and if you want to build something odd then Ashley is your man.

              paul,
i actually meant a criss craft *or* a cargo ship not *for*
and i just wanted to get an idea of the main wood because at the moment i am using balsa and it snaps all the time

              thanks

Have a look at my postings “Barrel Back” and Phil’s postings “another Barrel Back” these models are based upon a 1930s Chris Craft and if you fancy having a go at building it I will email the plans to you…just tell me how big you want the finished model to be and I will adjust the scale before sending it to you.

I will have a look through my plans for a cargo ship.

Instead of balsa try 1.5mm or 3mm birch faced plywood as its a lot stronger than balsa.

Once you decide what you want to build we will talk you through how to build it and what materials you will need.

You can get 3mm ply from B&Q and 1.5mm from model outlets on the interweb,

As a youngster (many many years ago) I used to visit local timber yards and ask for offcuts I managed to build many models without having to buy any wood at all.

I will work the scale on the drawing to as near to 600mm as looks right but give me a little time to sort it out as I am in the process of changing computers and need to load all the CAD software….do you understand CAD and DXF if so I could send the drawings as they are and you could make the changes.

                    Paul

well done young fellow, it’s always good to have some young blood in the hobby.
you will find that if you ask your CDT Teacher at school for some helpfull tips on  what paul is sending you, he should, if he’s a good teacher, be able to help as well.

What a sad comment on teaching in todays schools….isn’t there a phrase about “from the mouth of babes”

Don’t worry Luke we will talk you through every stage of the build including, if you wish, how the design was put together.

Meanwhile on a more everyday subject, my new computer has decided not to talk to my old one and so I am stuck mid way between data transfer……..so the drawings make take a little longer to get to you………the first thing I will have to do is remove the axe from the new machine!

As one of the first things that we will need to sort out is tools you had better list what hand and power tools you have access to and what, if any, experience do you have of using them?

i thought that too, paul, and for once was speachless, and to which i remain, excepting to say, in my day as a cdt teacher, if a boy or girl came to me with a craft problem i would bust a gut to help and encourage them. say no more,

I have rescaled most of the drawings to suit a model length of 600mm and have saved them as PDF files so you will be able to view them on Adobe and print them on a standard A4 printer without having to go through a CAD programme.
All the templates are the correct size for the model so it should make you work a little easier.
If you PM me with your email address I will send them to you.

nb: Jane has just reminded me that you might not know what PDF files are or what Adobe is so you will have to let me know and we can sort it out from there.

All of the drawings have been sent to your email, have a good look at them and ask about anything that you dont understand.

The next stage is to decide what material you want to make the frame out of, I would suggest 6mm ply but you might have a better choice.

It might help Luke if you wrote out some kind of crib sheet showing how the barrel back goes together.

                                      Hello Paul,

I am a new member, from İstanbul-Turkey, an amateur modell maker. Greetings to eveyone…

I am planning to construct an R/C Chris Craft model.

could you please send me the plans as well. I will cut the materials in CNC, therefore a CAD drawing would be perfect if possible.

                                      Thanks in advance.
