So having given you all a headache over my stupid questions earlier this year, I find that I have gotten the bug for building static models of old ships. So my next question is where can I purchase clearly explicit plans from please.

          Hi Pat,

If you could narrow it down a bit we can give you some ideas. 'Old ships' covers quite a bit of ground!

Do you mean ones with masts & sails and, if so, from what sort of period and what size original vessels are you interested in?

Thanks for coming back to me. Masts and sails and the two I have made have been about 24 inches long, quite enjoyed these so think I would like something similar.

              Pat,

You could start by checking the 'Static Sail' selection from MyHobbyStore here: **LINK**

If you would prefer to start a with a kit then there is a good selection for relatively inexperienced modellers from Jotika.

The field is still too broad, as nearly everything afloat before the 1860s had masts & sails. Do you mean warships, merchant ships, coastal vessels, ocean going vessels, schooners, square-riggers. What approximate date etc etc etc?

I am happy to try anything, I have just finished HMS Victory from a plan that my wife bought for Christmas

Unfortunately, most of the Napoleonic warship plans have fallen into the hands of the National Maritime Museum, who usually charge in excess of £100 for copies. Only plans of merchant sailing ships are in good supply, usually in books such as the David MacGregor or Harold A. Underhill series, plus many others. Sadly, very few ship modellers will even consider building merchant sailing ships, although, I must admit, I find them far more attractive than warships! I haven't the space or inclination to build large models, so stick to miniatures.

You can search for 2nd hand copies of the books in http://www.bookfinder.com

For an all-round selection of plans, I would suggest Deepwater Sail by Harold A. Underehill Alternatively these books can be obtained from libraries or found on Ebay from time to time. The advantage of ships like the above is no guns or gunports (the painted squares are just decoration in the County of Roxburgh) and very little in the way of fancy ornamentation. I leaned how to do it in miniature from the book Shipbuilding in Miniature by Donald McNarry. The plans of this smart little barquentine are in Deepwater Sail

Correction to above. Deepwater Sail author is Harold A Underhill not Underehill

                              Pat,

Bob Wilson explained how he makes his models in an article in the World of Model Boating special issue published last year:

I don't think MyHobbyStore have a back issue in stock at the moment but you may be able to find one online somewhere.
