I am attempting to locate plans to build a model of the African Queen. Something in the 48" to 60" range. Also looking for plans for a suitable engine and boiler. Any info would be appreciated.

Hi Byron,

Cant help with plans but ‘Kingston Mouldings’ have just released a F/G hull unfortunately the size is 361/2 x 10 1/2".

Robin would certainly have built this with steam in mind.

Suggest you check out his site, there is quite a bit of info on steam on there.

I found this on the Hobby`s website, any good?? On reflection it may be a bit small at 13″, however it does specify a steam engine (pop-pop) I dare say you could enlarge the plans??? Ashley

Live Steam Magazine had some sketches of the African Queen in years back, I am looking through my collection to try to find it. I will try to scan it when I locate it.

The boat used in the movie was really powered by a gas or diesel engine hidden under the green box back of the steam engine. Its Hull is ether iron or steel plate.

I was being a bit tungincheek with the last post…as the "jungle queen" is aimed at junior modellers and not likely to be of much use to a fellow aiming to put a proper steam engine in something ! (sorry). however,I could see that knocking up a jungle Queen to compliment a larger version might be fun.   Ashley

Hi Ashley,

I was looking at it thinking it might be a good introduction project for Cubs/Scouts. We did some Pop-Pops about 5 years back with them, and I am always on the lookout for interesting projects to supply to the Leadership Team.

Gerald. Good idea. Berengar my lad is in the scouts (just gone up), and he took his flying boat in to show for a hobby badge. They were well impressed. Also  look at the hobbies site  http://www.alwayshobbies.com/  note there are 2 firms..hobb Y s   and hobb IE s. one of them does a nice mississippi steam boat, simple  thing for pop-pops.   Ashley

    I have looked for such a plan for about ten years, have never found the boat.

 

A few years ago I did come across the engine, seems the company still has the plans.

 

the boats plans were destroyed during the blitz, so I hear…

 

Now with retirement staring me in the eyes I should have time to build her if I can find the plan.

 

Failing that I could just build a working model of Graf Zepplin drew those plans back in 71 while working for a radio control model company. Think they are in the attic…If I drew it once guess I can do it again with cad this time.

 

I have seen the one out of Florida, it was on display localy twice once for a convention, once for tall stacks, paddle wheel steam boats ( local Event) boat builders heaven..

G’day Bryon, I don’t know about a suitable boiler,but there’s a bloke regularly sells V twin engines on fleebay. Come to think of it, I reckon I’ve seen an Africa Queen model for sale there too!
