      Hi All,

I am very new to boating, but would like to find somewhere to sail a speedboat – seems that is much harder than I realised – so many ponds are restricted and do not allow any model boats at all.

In London (especially south west London), can anyone please suggest a few places where speedboats can be used?

      Thanks very much.

      Simon

          Hi Simon,

When you say Speed boats do you mean fast electric powered or internal combustion ??

          Regards Ray

            Hi Ray,

Thanks for responding – greatly appreciated.

It's an electric powered (3s lipo) boat – my first one is the Joysway Mad Flow, for example.

After looking around I realised most general ponds/water bodies in parks are typically not welcoming of any model boats of any variety so I am wondering which places are "boat friendly" – otherwise my new hobby is "dead in the water" before it's even begun!

              Hi Simon,

You may have to join a club, I would recommend Pheonix MBC they have the use of a Lake at Silvermere golf club just off the A3 inside the M25. nice bunch of guys

Bushy park is ok too , Ashley runs fast electric boats there, but I think you would know that ??

              Regards Ray

                Hi Ray,

Thanks for the information – I will definitely reach out to the club.

I had enquired if speed boats were welcome at bushy park but don’t think I saw a response – no problem I will make it down there one time as well (although Mother’s Day this week might rule out this Sunday as an option!)

                Thanks for your help.

                Simon

                  Hi Simon,

Being a bit pedantic for a moment, I'm not sure how anyone would actually 'sail' a speedboat – I suspect you mean 'operate'…

But anyway, if speed really is your thing, you could have a look at some of the very advanced hydrofoil yachts which are reaching incredible speeds nowadays. World record attempts (full-size) are now being attempted I believe.

In model form, these would probably fall outside the "Beginner" category – but, for a future project maybe ?

Definitely join a club – those guys will have already ironed-out most of the problems that beget someone new to the hobby. As a closing note, owners of water sometimes look more favourably on sail power – clean, quiet, kind to the environment etc.

                  Have fun,

                  Dave

                    Hi Dave,

Thanks for the information and advice – really appreciated.

I’m not necessarily only focused on speed, it just happened my first boat is a fast electric one – maybe as I learn more I’ll get into other types of boats as well.

Pop down to Bushy Park, we have a rather eclectic variety of watercraft (not all boats) !

Fast electric are ok but not internal combustion.

Free public car park next to the pond (use Hampton Court entrance), all welcome.

Parking can be difficult if it’s a nice day and the car park can be full by 10 ish.

Arriving at 9 ish recommend .
